:After a considerable number of transfers to and from Earth, Diego has seldom found himself posted to one place for long enough to make lasting friendships. As evidenced by his friendship with [[Yael, Ashley Deneve|Ashley Yael]], he has always seemed to find it easier to form friendships with fellow counsellors. Initially impressed by [[Reinard, Greir|Greir Reinard]]'s honesty, dedication to duty and emotional resilience, Diego found himself talking with [[Reinard, Greir|Greir]] about the Battle of Bondi, in which [[Reinard, Greir|Greir]] had lost a family member. Later on in the conversation, Diego talked to Greir about the accident that had left her wheelchair bound and suffering from aphasia. Having shared such personal things with each other, they quickly developed a mutual respect and set a precedent of being able to share problems that they would both tend to keep bottled up.

:The original request for Diego's assignment to the [[Embassy of Duronis II|Duronis II Embassy]] came from Fleet Captain [[Toni Turner]], who was looking for a second counsellor to care for Lieutenant Commander [[Yael, Ashley Deneve|Ashley Yael]]. The [[Embassy of Duronis II|Embassy]]'s Chief Counsellor had suffered torture and sexual abuse at the hands of a [[Laudean]] criminal, Shanq. Following a difficult rehabiliation process in which Diego attempted to confront some of the issues that had led [[Yael, Ashley Deneve|Ashley]] into a situation where he had become dependant on Shanq prior to the attack, the Lieutenant Commander eventually returned to duty. Shortly afterwards, both men departed the [[Embassy of Duronis II|Embassy]], Diego returning to Earth once more to resume his service at Starfleet Medical. Counting Ashley as a friend, Diego has kept in touch with him when possible since their reassignment.

Diego Herrera dual majored in medicine and counselling at Starbase 118 Academy, and has served in both capacities throughout his Starfleet career, most notably on the [[USS Eagle]], the [[USS Challenger-A]], at the [[Embassy of Duronis II|Duronis II Embassy]] and aboard the [[USS Thunder]]. He is known for being cool under fire and for his laid back attitude. As a commanding officer, he believes that developing positive working relationships with his crew is the key to ensuring that everyone is able to perform to their full potential. In his spare time, he is a [[Parrises Squares]] enthusiast.
 
It has now been over two years since Chen contacted his parents on the homeworld. He currently has no intention of re-establishing regular contact in the near future, although he does occasionally arrange for a communiqué to be sent to them to let them know that he is alright. These communiqués are always sent through a third party, on Earth.

Simply put, Chen likes to test himself. He is extremely observant, and even as a child he never used to miss a trick. If ever any of his parents had a domestic dispute, he would know even if he didn't witness it, purely by watching they way they interacted with each other. After a while, they would stop trying to cover such things up to spare his feelings, which for a long time created an open bond between all five of them. After a while, however, Chen developed an interest in the Federation at large. He would obsessively watch news reports, taking a particularly keen interest in updates on foreign affairs. For a long time, he dreamed of a career in Starfleet, and as he neared the age for entering the Academy, he became more and more interested in the field of Intelligence. To Chen, information has always been a highly prized commodity, and something more potent than any form of currency.
 
This led him into trouble on more than one occasion during his studies on Andor. It was not unheard of for him to end up in a fight for eavesdropping on conversations, although from this he learned that being discovered is something that must be avoided at all costs. It is his strongest personal belief that others should always believe that you know less than you actually do.
