Overview
The main sickbay onboard Starbase 118 consists of six full decks, Deck 500 to 505. Most of the turbolifts that run through these decks are located near their centers. The medical facilities aboard Starbase 118 are the most advanced, the most efficaciously utilized, and the most competently staffed of any with which most medical officers would be familiar, except of course for planet side facilities on worlds like Earth or Vulcan.
Administrative Center
Deck 500 is the administrative center of this medical facility, which the civilians call a “hospital” and the Starfleet officers call a “sickbay.” The administrative offices, including the Chief Medical Officer’s office and the Head Nurse’s office, are located here. The administrative deck of the main medical facility is often referred to as “Quingenti,” a word that comes from the Terran language of Latin and means “five hundred,” a reference to the deck on which it is located. Many objects, such as desks, doors, and PADDs, are often emblazoned with a stylized letter “D,” which represents, in a highly aestheticized fashion, the ancient Terran Roman numeral for “five hundred.”
Chief Medical Officer's Office
The Chief Medical Officer’s office is more a suite than a single room. The primary office chamber contains a desk and desktop monitor, as well as larger and newer versions of the medical displays found on the walls of the offices of most CMOs in Starfleet. From here, one can monitor the status and progress of literally hundreds of patients in the Main Medical Facility and at the other medical facilities located throughout the base. Adjoining the relatively basic office is a sort of lounge. This lounge area can be redesigned at the Chief Medical Officer’s discretion; some possibilities, however, are comfortable chairs organized around a Japanese rock garden, couches around a coffee table, or two couches facing each other for less formal individual meetings with the base’s CMO.
Adjoining the lounge room is the Chief Medical Officer’s Conference Room. This room is dominated by a large conference table, which is roughly the same size of a table in a starship conference room. As the length of the office extends along the outermost hull of the starbase, each of these three chambers has a wall composed almost entirely of windows, looking out into space.
