Colus was outgoing in school and was a participant on the diving and swimming teams throughout high school. Colus is the first in his family to join Starfleet, and his parents have always been supportive of his decision. Colus' older sister, Amala was chosen over Colus to become a joined Trill. At first, Colus was upset at being passed over, but as time continued and he saw the changes in his sister after the joining, he became more accepting of the fact that he was passed over. | |||

Receiving a fresh start at Starfleet Academy, Colus was away from his family for the first time in his life. He found it more liberating than he could have imagined. His first year roommate remained his roommate throughout the four year training. The roommate, Bradley Jones, was from Earth, and he educated Colus on all things Human. This was the first opportunity that Colus had been afforded to spend time with those other than Trills. He found that living amongst other races opened his mind to other possibilities. His ideals were challenged, and he found that he saw life with a larger view. | |||
