((10 Forward))

::Luran took her coffee to one of the tables furthest away from the viewports, which tended to be the most popular seating area. Sorani didn’t need the distraction of a view outside to keep her from her work. Nor did she particularly want to hear every bit of gossip that came into the room. Some things you could really do without hearing and she didn’t need to add irrelevant gossip to the list of distractions either.::

oO(Luran) They don’t want me here...Oo

::She was trying to keep a low profile. She had been excited to have her first starship assignment and to meet new challenges. She’d been aware of the circumstances surrounding the appointment and wasn’t as prepared as she thought for the welcome she’d received so far. It wasn’t that people didn’t like her. They didn’t know her, they knew their last CSO who had now departed the cycle. She knew it was hard for them and that they needed time to grieve and adjust to their loss. Her welcome hadn’t been frosty for the most part, but she could tell her presence was hard for some.::

oOGive them time. Keep out of their faces and let them come to you.Oo

::tr'Khellian sat at his station alone on the battle bridge on light duty recovering from a broken wrist, dislocated shoulder, punctured lung, and torn ACL. He was smiling from ear to ear.:: oO It’s taken 9 years but it’s finally time..payback time!Oo . ::He put down his PADD::

::Having found a suitable table, she set herself and her coffee down and took out a PADD. She called up the first pieces of data to be reviewed, which was the ship’s specifications and facilities. This was her first starship assignment since her cadet cruise and second duty assignment. She had come from a small science station based near her home planet and was glad that if she had to be reassigned it was to a science vessel. They’d had a few of them stop by in her time on the Azure Station but had never been on one. She would have hated to be assigned to something else. She was pleased to note that the facilities were nearly as diverse as she had been used to, and more impressive in many ways.::

::Coalescing from raw photons in the darkness in the far starboard corner furthest away from Luran is a 4 foot Ferengi dressed in extremely baggy and vibrant red lame’ clothes and carrying a beach ball sized fluorescent sphere. At random intervals colors swirled and ebbed and flowed. The Ferengi puts on a pair of large orange sunglasses whose lenses are shaped like flames and made his way quietly and efficiently to where his target sat sipping coffee. ::

::Luran had just finished reviewing the ship specifications, paying particular attention to the science labs, sensor arrays and other equipment. She picked up her coffee and took a sip, this was the standard stuff produced by the replicator and to Sorani it simply had no flavour. The Al-Leyan economy was largely supported by the export of a popular blend but up until now Luran hadn’t been able to see the appeal. It was supposed to be sweeter than Human and Klingon blends but she found it to be very bitter. Having tasted this “coffee” she wasn’t sure she wanted to try other blends at all.::

::Rik Fabre approached Sorani and when he reached his target he cleared his throat gently.::

Rik Fabre: Excuse me ma'am, that coffee looks a little hot and could be a health hazard.

Luran: I think you’re mistaken sir. Who are you anyway?

::She stared at him taking in his appearance. He looked completely ridiculous and what was that in his hands? The overall effect was that she wasn’t too comfortable with his presence.::

Rik: Rik Fabre. I'm from ship safety services. ::Smiling innocently::

::Luran didn’t think he belonged on the ship at all. Ship safety services? Why hadn’t she heard of that before and why wasn’t this creature in some more appropriate uniform? She was feeling confused and uneasy.::

Rik Fabre: On second thought I need you to hold this ::Reaching out to hand Luran the 1 foot diameter sphere.::

::Luran looked at the large orb with swirling colours. If someone else, more appropriately dressed had handed her it she wouldn’t have been so apprehensive, but something about this funny looking man set her on edge.::

Luran: Why did you say you’re here again?

Rik: This is 10 Forward, my duty station. I am called whenever something needs to be cooled down. Here, you must hold this. ::Dropping the sphere into Luran’s hands.::

::Weren’t adults capable of cooling their own drinks? Luran, like most of her people, was well known for being a cautious safety nut but this was weird even to her. She found the orb unceremoniously plopped into her hands so that ruled out the possibility of abandoning her drink and going to her quarters.::

::As soon as Luran made contact with the sphere it begun to rotate in her hands.::

::Music then begun to issue forth; a deep heavy thumping beat. ::

THUMP....THUMP...THUMP...Whoop....Whoop...Bauwnchicka Wwowwow'''<nowiki>::Over and over again::

::Luran was so surprised and horrified that she nearly dropped the sphere. In fact she was quickly coming round to the idea of throwing it and smashing it against the wall.::

::After one full rotation the sphere begun to rise out of her open hands and to float in the air; rising until it reached an apex point above Rik's dumpy Ferengi form. Lights of all colors begin shooting forth from the sphere in time with the music.::

Luran: By the branch! What’s going on here?

::From all around 10 forward heads began to turn. Drawn to the thumping music and the bright dazzling scintillating colors emanating from the sphere.::

::Luran noticed all the attention this little display was drawing and she could feel her face grow hotter and hotter. Her heart was racing and she wanted to be anywhere else, she didn’t think things could get much worse.::

Rik: I am a firefighter...of hotness. And YOUR hotness could cause a hull breach. ' **ALERT. ALERT**. ALL HANDS TO BATTLESTATIONS!'

::Rik reaches down and grabs his pants and with one mighty tug rips them off and begins to twirl them over his head while at the same time gyrating wildly to the beat.::

::Ok, she was wrong, so very wrong. Luran had never felt so embarrassed in all her life and she couldn’t fathom why this was happening. Surely someone here didn’t resent her posting to CSO that much... did they? Al-Leyans didn’t play tricks like this on each other. They were raised from birth to be model citizens and an outburst like this would result in the offender being hurried to a counselor for attitude readjustment.::

Luran: Enough! Stop this foolishness! Get your attitude readjusted you creepy, nasty little thing.

tr'Khellian (from the empty Battle Bridge) ::COM badge tap and with a very schmarmy and cheddar cheesy MC host voice.:: =/\= Ladies and gentlemen, may introduce to you Rik Fabre pocket dancer par excellence. Let’s give him a big round of applause, he works for tips. He is dancing this day to welcome someone of note. A scientist so incredible other scientists hide their diplomas. A scientific data hound so tenacious the Jem Hadar tried using her blood instead of Ketrecel white. An intellect so massive the Borg selected her to be the new queen and king in perpetuity. Ladies and gentlemen of the USS Avandar it is my honor to present to you Lt Cmdr Luran Sorani, our new chief scientific officer, who I before this dance at least was able to call a dear friend.=/\=

::The voice was faintly familiar but she couldn’t place why. Luran was mortified, she could feel tears welling up in her eyes. Was someone mocking her intelligence? The part about other scientists hiding their diplomas stung the most. She had to suck in and bite her bottom lip to stop it quivering.::

S’Lone: ::Now in his own voice and in a good natured tone.:: =/\=One round of drinks are on me.=/\=

::A loud cheer went up in 10 Forward.::

S’Lone: =/\= So raise your glasses, mugs or tankards and toast, a great sport, a superior scientist, a keen intellect, and heck of a good natured friend. All joking aside. Welcome aboard. This retired retired Marine First Sergeant now must take my leave of you as I will soon be transported into deep space without a pressure suit. But all in all worth it to have finally gotten a thick slice of revenge on an old friend from a time when life was simpler.=/\=

::Well it explained the familiarity in the voice. Nine years was a long time and she sat thinking about the few times she had been in contact with marines at this point she wasn’t too sure. She was still a bit shocked by the surprise welcome.::

Rik Fabre to Luran quietly: S’Lone’s on the Battlebridge. ::With a wink.:: I was not supposed to tell ya that. Don’t let on I told ya.  ::Then even more quietly for Luran’s ears only:: He really needs a friend.

::Luran was a little unconvinced but she pictured herself marching down there and banging on his door until he opened up. Then she would begin banging on his head. She thought he ought to know a lot better than to behave like that. His years away from Leya-I could not have been kind to him.::

::So it was S’Lone, after all these years he was still kicking about, but if he was retired what was he doing here? That thought was enough to fire up her curiosity.::

Rik Fabre: :: In a very loud voice.:: I’m here all week. ::In a flash of bright neon red, yellow and pink light Rik detonated into a flash of fluorescent metal butterflies which in turn burst into mini fireworks each spelling out...

::Once the show was over people started going about their business again.::

oO(Luran) So much for keeping a low profile.Oo

::She picked up her PADD and looked at it but she could no longer remember what she was trying to do and had no appetite for work left. She picked up the mug of half-drunk coffee and went to recycle the waste, then turned to leave the lounge. She headed back to her quarters to try and relax- it had not been an easy time since coming on the ship. If she had thought things would pan out like this she would probably have stayed on Azure station, which was friendly and familiar.::

((One hour later. Battlebridge))

::After waiting an hour, tr’Khellian logs out of his station on the empty Battlebridge and retires to his quarters for a glass of port and a fitful sleep.::

::Before sleep overtook him S’Lone was lost in thought. Did he go too far? Sure. Did he tweak her ironclad sensibilities? Likely. Did he cross the line? Probably. Would it have offended anyone on her planet? MORTIFIED THEM and maybe even earned him a trip to attitude readjustment. Was he sorry? NO. yes. Maybe. Did he actually miss her? yes.::
