The Featured Bio Contest is an opportunity to recognize our existing members as well as to inspire prospective members to examine our group and join in on the fun. Furthermore, the contest endeavors to encourage current members to explore the SB118 Wiki and learn more about their fellow members and the adventures others have been having across the fleet.

Overview

Each month, the Featured Bio Contest Team reviews nominated character biographical wiki articles and selects those that meet the contest's minimum selection criteria to be showcased as Featured Nominees.

At the end of the month, one winning article will be selected from these Featured Nominees to become the Featured Bio of StarBase 118 on both the SB118 Wiki main page and through the Newsies, Reporter, and Publicity Teams. In addition, both Featured Nominees and Featured Bio winners are granted use of special badges that they can then add to their bios.

Featured Articles and Badges

The Featured Bio Contest recognizes three types of featured articles. All featured articles must meet the minimum selection criteria of the contest.

Featured Bio Contest Team Member (Sapphire) A biographical article for a character whose writer is a member of the Featured Bio Contest Team and has participated in three rounds of the competition. Featured Nominee (Silver) A biographical article that has been nominated to the Featured Bio Contest and meets the minimum selection criteria. Featured Bio of StarBase 118 (Gold) A Featured Nominee that has been selected by the Featured Bio Contest Team to become the Featured Bio of SB118 for one month.

Featured Articles may display special badges designating their status. There are two sets available: the wide edition (seen above and suitable for display as a header or footer for a character's sidebar) and the standard award size edition (seen below and suitable for display in an awards rack alongside other awards and service ribbons).

Display of the badges is at the discretion of the individual author, although examples of badge placement are available in the Featured Bio Contest Tutorials.

How to Nominate an Article

See someone's bio on the wiki that you think deserves to be featured on the main page and through our publicity and news teams? Then simply reply to the current month's nominations thread with a link to the article in the Featured Bio Contest forum! If it's your own article, we'll get in touch with you via private messaging. If you're nominating someone else, let us know their forum handle so that we can send them a private message to see if they approve of the nomination.

Before you nominate an article, please ensure that it meets (to the best of your own judgement), the minimum selection criteria for the contest. In particular, make sure that your nominated article meets the following rules:

1. Nominated articles must be of a player character played by a current and active member.
2. Nominated articles must be either a primary or secondary player character. PNPCs are ineligible.
3. All information in the article must be curent as of the submission date.

List of Featured Articles

Sidney Riley June 2013 Fleet Captain Sidney Riley is 7/8 Terran and 1/8 Deltan and while she does have Deltan pheromones in her system it’s not enough to give her problems interacting with others or require her to take the Deltan Oath of celibacy. She was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2350 and is ten minutes younger than her older, identical twin sister Shannon. Sidney’s family has a complicated, troubled past and she grew up on star ships until the age of six. Disaster struck the family that summer when a shuttle carrying Sidney’s father Ryan and twin Shannon encountered an unexplained anomaly. The ship disappeared and both of them were declared missing. Sidney was raised by step parents on Vulcan until the age of 15 and had a difficult time making the adjustments to life there, refusing to conform to their practices and beliefs. Events came to a head when she stole a shuttle and attempted to escape back to Earth. She was caught and taken before the council on Vulcan to answer for her actions. Her step parents did not support her during this time, but one of her father’s best friends Doctor Michael Mitchell did. She was let off and was on her best behaviour for some months after the incident but trouble broke out again when she went on a hunger strike. The family finally relented and let her return to earth, there she finished high school and decided to go into medicine through the influence of Doctor Mitchell. She completed her medical degree before deciding to enter StarFleet Academy. Fleet Captain Sidney Riley has had a long and successful career with many personal and professional ups and downs. She has experienced love, heart break and the loss of an unborn child. She has provided medical aid and relief during times of conflict. She has fought and survived tough battles including the Gorn Conflict, the first and second battles of Eratis and Operation Bright Star to name a few. She has faced and conquered it all, risen through the ranks to become the inspirational leader she is today. Her career has spanned 9 years and seen her serving on three ships and a station during her time in the fleet – the USS Wallace, the USS Independence, the USS Tiger and Starbase 118 Ops.

Jorus Cogud May 2013 Lieutenant Jorus Cogud began his career as a helmsman after graduating from StarFleet Academy with a major in helm and navigation, a minor in security and tactical. He worked his way up to chief helmsman before moving into his current role as the chief tactical officer of the USS Discovery-C. The Trill was born on a Ferengi Smuggling vessel, which the family were in hiding on after getting revenge for the murder of his grandfather by Orions. Though Jorus never knew his grandfather the significant event had a profound effect on the family’s attitude and feelings towards the race. Jorus was brought up to hate and despise the people because of what they’d done and will avoid them even to this day. The rest of his upbringing was just as interesting and he started training with Ferengi Energy Whips when he was just 7 years old. He continued to practice with them long after he left the vessel and has reached a professional level of competence with them. He keeps his skills sharp by practising whenever he has a spare moment. Jorus was given a Marauder Mo action figure as a gift by his godfather Zug, who in a typical Ferengi fashion recommended he keep the original packaging so it would be worth more. His godfather also taught him to play Dabo from the age of 12. Jorus keeps the action figures to remind him of his upbringing on the Ferengi Vessel.

Katy Orman April 2013 Lieutenant Commander Katy Orman is the Chief of Security on StarBase 118. As winner for this month, her bio will be displayed on the wiki’s front page for the month of April. A Human/Orion hybrid, Orman started her career on the USS Resolution as an engineering officer and later switched to the security role. She also served on the USS Eagle as Chief of Security, and the USS Victory in the same role before moving into her current assignment. Katy has a number of unique and interesting skills. She knows a number of meditative disciplines and claims to have been trained since childhood in an unusual martial art form she calls Shiji Gungfu. She has a small undetectable implant in her body which makes telepathic contact with her impossible.

Diego Herrera March 2013 Captain Diego Herrera is the commanding officer of the USS Vigilant. He dual majored in medicine and counselling at Starbase 118 Academy, and has served in both capacities throughout his Starfleet career, most notably on the USS Eagle, the USS Challenger-A, at the Duronis II Embassy and aboard the USS Thunder. Diego’s sister Adana is lucky to be alive and the accident that crippled her is the reason he originally joined StarFleet and pursued a medical career. Interestingly he still plays the dangerous game that she was involved in when the accident happened. His career has given him many unique and unusual circumstances to deal with such as sharing a salt bath with a visiting Mantaran Ambassador in his early days on the USS Eagle. He helped with the psychological recovery of Chief Counsellor Ashely Yael in the wake of torture and sexual assault on Duronis II. Diego has a laid back and pragmatic attitude and this is reflected in his command style. He played a pivotal role and led his team to victory in preventing the Zakdorn breaking away from the Federation to form a new alliance with the Klingon Empire.

Michael Angelo Valentino December 2012 Marine Captain Michael Angelo Valentino of the Embassy of Duronis II trained with the elite Vulcan security ministry known as the V'Shar at the young age of 16. There he excelled thanks to both his eidetic memory and athletic prowess, and he honed both his skills in weaponry and martial arts as well as his tactical cunning. Yet while the Vulcans are renowned for their reserved passion, Valentino hasn't let their philosophy of emotional suppression extend to his romantic aspirations. This charming playboy from Sicily has attained a list of conquests nearly as long as his list of honors and achievements. Still, he's not a cold heartbreaker, and he holds a strong sense of duty and doing what's right... at least what he thinks is right!

Karynn Ehlanii Brice November 2012 Karynn Ehlanii Brice originally intended on becoming a science officer, following an interest first stirred by her grandparents at the age of three, but during her fourth year at the academy, the Haliian discovered her new passion: counseling. Since graduating in 2384, she has served on three vessels, including the famed USS Ronin and USS Independence-A, where she served under the command of such esteemed officers as Ben Walker and David Cody. It was through Walker's wedding that Karynn met her future husband Ethan Brice, and though the two had been fortunate to serve on the same ships during most of their relationship, they now are continuing their marriage long-distance, with Ethan on the USS Apollo and Karynn on the USS Drake. Ironically, having worked her way up to the rank of commander with much of that time spent as a counselor, it is only recently that Karynn has returned to her first love of the sciences, now serving as the Drake's chief science officer. Karynn's story is one of perseverance. Whether it was overcoming her disappointment about failing her initial Academy Entrance Exam or gaining the confidence to help lead her shipmates through challenging times, first as their counselor and later as their first officer, Karynn has demonstrated throughout her years in the fleet that officers don't have to sacrifice their compassion or become militaristic, harsh, or overbearing as they move up the ranks. In the words of her previous CO David Cody, Karynn "is familiar to us all. This officer, has always been a bright and shining star and is, at least in my opinion, one of the best officers I've had the pleasure of serving with."

Velana October 2012 It's a common misconception that Vulcans lack emotion or passion. In fact, the Vulcans might say it is the intensity of their emotions and passion that have led them to adopt their strict philosophy based on pure logic. Yet, not all Vulcans believe that the best way to live is to temper the Vulcan heart, and these Vulcans are known as the v'tosh ka'tur, or "Vulcans without logic," some of whom were first encountered by Captain Archer and the Enterprise NX-01. The Mercury's chief medical officer Dr. Velana is a descendant of the group and soon after her arrival on Earth, she discovered the challenges that came with being a non-traditional Vulcan in Starfleet. Upon her graduation from the Academy, she was assigned to the USS Independence-A, and her first mission took her to the Mirror Universe, where she met her "other" self. She later saved the life of Alleran Tan and moved up the ranks, eventually becoming chief medical officer of the USS Tiger-A and USS Mercury and continuing her commitment to follow in her father's footsteps as a dutiful ship's physician. That's not to say it's been all work and no play for this fashionable Vulcan who enjoys Gothic literature and jogging on a holodeck simulation of San Francisco's Baker Beach, but for more details, you'll have to check out her bio yourself!

Kali Nicholotti September 2012 Captain Nicholotti's bio is a beautifully written example of how the 118Wiki can go beyond lists of stats and dates to serve as a comprehensive narrative of a member's time in the Fleet. From her first away mission when she defended a then-Lt. Cmdr. Andrus Jaxx to her assignment as commanding officer of StarBase 118, one day after delivering her godchildren, Nicholotti's bio presents the story of an officer descended from a long military legacy who rose to command making pivotal decisions in times of crisis. Through it all, her fierce loyalty to her shipmates remains steadfast.

Della Vetri August 2012 Captain of the USS Avandar and native of the Trill homeworld's southern continent, Della Vetri's life changed at the age of nineteen when she became the sixth host to the Vetri symbiote. Besides the great honor and sense of achievement such a joining usually entailed, Vetri soon gained previously unsuspected psionic abilities as well. She attended Starfleet Academy to forge a suitable legacy for her symbiote's next host, and served as a counselor on such assignments as the USS Indria-A and the USS Constitution-B before eventually becoming the latter's first officer. Her first command was the USS Aurora, and soon after, she and her crew moved to their new home, the Avandar.

Joining the Featured Bio Contest Team

Team members who have actively participated in three rounds of the competition are authorized to display the Featured Bio Contest Team Member (Sapphire) badge on their characters' pages. A standard award size version is also available.

Please note, if you wish to join the team you must meet the following requirements:

1. You must be an active member of SB118 in good standing.
2. Your primary character's own biographical article on the wiki must meet the minimum selection criteria of the contest.
3. You must be willing to take an active role in not only judging other articles to be featured but also helping other members with constructive feedback on how to improve their articles.
4. You should be reasonably proficient with using and editing the wiki such that you could assist other members who have questions about it.
5. You must be willing to forego your own character's article from being chosen as a featured article. It will instead be listed as a Featured Bio Contest Team Member (Sapphire) article.

	Taskforces
