Skepus: This leads me to call my first witness: Lieutenant Commander Yito Seja, Chief Security Officer onboard the USS Constitution-B. Commander Yito, would you please take the stand?
Seja walked up onto the stand. Seja looked towards the captain, a feeling of guilt inside. The captain offered her a gentle nod.
A young Bajoran woman was led to the witness stand by Lieutenant Vyntas.
Vyntas: Lieutenant Commander Yito Seja, do you solemnly affirm to uphold the laws and values of the United Federation of Planets through truthful testimony today?
Seja took the oath of truth. Seja never considered lying, other might but Seja held by her principles.
Vyntas: Thank you, commander.
Aubrey: Proceed, Commander Skepus.
Skepus: Commander, despite being relatively young in your career, you are quite decorated!
Yito: I have been decorated but I don’t see the relevance?
He had caught her off-guard she had expected it to be about her.
Skepus: It’s important! Lieutenant Commander Yito has received Starfleet Academy Graduate Ribbon, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Diplomacy Ribbon, Silver Lifesaving Ribbon, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Ribbon, Explorer's Ribbon, Defense of Temporal Flow Ribbon, Lifesaving Ribbon, First Contact Ribbon. And in 3 short years, she went from a fresh Academy Graduate to a Lieutenant Commander and Chief of Security on a massive Starfleet vessel. This is a decorated and respected officer.
Seja couldn’t help but feel proud when her achievements were listed like that, she had never really thought about it.
Yito: :: Nodded :: That is correct.
More grandstanding, as if the courtroom were a theatre audience. It was obvious that Skepus preferred a jury trial. Aubrey was growing a bit weary of the theatrics.
Aubrey: Do you have a question for the witness, commander?
Skepus: Yes. Your first question is this: Are the logs correct when they say that the Fleet Captain did not take you or anyone from your department as a security detail?
Yito: No, she took Lieutenant Lystra.
Skepus: I see. And is Lieutenant Lystra trained as a security officer?
Yito: No, she a tactical officer.
Seja wanted to say more but she knew Skepus would just shout it down.
Skepus: Indeed. Thank you for confirming what the logs say. Now I have a question for you. You were there. Do you disagree with the information I have presented in the logs? I understand your interpretation of the facts may be different, but do we agree on the facts?
Yito: To the best of my knowledge the facts appear to be correct as per the logs.
Skepus: Thank you. Including the replicator?
Yito: Yes, a replicator appears to have been left behind programmed with a limited number of items.
Skepus: What security measures were taken to prevent the replicator from being reverse engineered?
Yito: I’m not a qualified engineer so can’t answer that.
Skepus: I see. So it remains to be seen how, if at all, the replicator was secured. But let’s go back to the start. As I understand it, the captain told you from the outset that you mission to Zeltion IV was a trade mission, is that correct? If so, did you see these orders?
Yito: Yes, the captain told us that the mission to Zeltion was for trade. I never saw the original orders.
Skepus: Your captain didn’t show you orders that appeared to flaunt typical Federation and Starfleet regulations regarding trade partners? Logs from your own Assistant Chief Science Officer–Lieutenant Junior Grade Lazarus Davis–state there was concern among the senior staff about this mission. And then she elected to take a tactical officer over her highly decorated security chief?
Yito: Lystra trade experience was one of the reasons she was chosen for the mission.
Skepus: And none of these peculiarities were enough to prompt you or anyone else from requesting to see the orders given?
Yito: I believed the captain as did the entirely of the senior staff. We had reason to doubt her.
Skepus: Thank you for your cooperation, Lieutenant Commander Yito. ::to the judge:: Thank you, Your Honor, I have no further questions for this witness.
Aubrey: Commander Maddox, do you have any questions for this witness?
Maddox: Thank you, Your Honor. ::to Seja:: You knew beforehand that Lt. Lystra was accompanying her for the trade talks, why didn’t you object?
Yito: Lystra is a skilled tactical officer and has previous experience in intelligence. I trusted her to protect the captain.
Maddox: So you felt her tactical and prior experience made her better suited for this mission?
Yito: I believed in her abilities, her previous trade experience made her better suited to the mission than other security officers.
Seja didn’t know if that statement would help of hinder the captain but it was the truth.
Maddox: Thank you, Commander, no further questions. Thank you, your Honor.
Aubrey: Thank you, Commander Yito. You are dismissed, but the court reserves the right to recall you if there is a need. Commander Skepus, do you have another witness to call?
