Personality

Hobbies and Pastimes

  • Music: Walter is an accomplished violist, though it is a hobby that has fallen by the wayside since joining the Maquis.
  • Fitness: Since the academy, Walter has been a student of Lerdrit, and practices regularly. He also keeps in condition by lifting weights and running.
  • Literature: A voracious reader, he is always part-way through at least one book at any given time, and his reading list is composed of authors from across the Federation.

Likes and Dislikes

  • Likes:
    • Music: Having played since he was young, music is an integral part of Walter's life.
    • Drinking: Preferably alone, he enjoys a good brandy or whiskey.
  • Dislikes:
    • Social Situations: Hell is other people.

Living Quarters

Walter travels light and keeps very little in the way of personal effects in his quarters. The furnishings are all standard-issue and he has made no effort to personalise his living space beyond the addition of a few decorations. A print of Vincent van Gogh's "The Starry Night" hangs on one wall, complemented by a "Starry Night Over the Rhone" on another. A pair of sturdy, post-eventualist, pre-Matoian sculptures from Bajor sit on a corner table by the sofa.

Working Areas

Walter is either on the bridge, or working from his quarters on the Skarbek, because there is precious little space elsewhere to do it.

Name Relationship Description

Erin Reynolds
Close Friend
Walter has known Erin almost as long as he's been a member of the Maquis, the botanist present in the DMZ when the treaties began to break down and fighting began. They've been friends for years, she was his best man at his wedding, and the pair have had each other's backs through thick and thin. Their relationship stumbled when he organised the kidnapping of her sister, Quinn, who was a serving intelligence officer in Starfleet. They have since patched things up, somewhat helped by the fact he was able to help in convincing Quinn to join the Maquis, but it has left her with little tolerance for any attempt of his to keep secrets.

Jocelyn Marshall
Trusted Friend
The happy-go-lucky human is someone that Walter has come to rely on; capable, sensible and sharing a similar set of morals and ethics to him, helping him keep the more roguish members of the crew in line. He appreciates her humour and insight, even if he doesn't admit it, as well as the fact she can pretty much match him drink for drink when its time to crack out the liquor.

Valesha Sienelis
Mercenary Friend
No one knows in what circumstances Walter and Valesha met, and neither has felt inclined to share the story. Whatever happened between them, it was enough for the him to trust her and bring her into the resistance cell, and there she's remained ever since. Known for firing off sarcastic remarks at one another as though they're exchanging mortar fire across trenches, they nonetheless appear to know how far is too far, and don't cross that line. She is one of the few crew who receive rare invitations to share a drink, when the mood takes him.

Quinn Reynolds
Mistake Waiting to Happen
Walter cannot decide if he trusts the former Starfleet intelligence officer or not, wavering on whether her conversion to the cause is genuine or a deep cover for an intel operation. She's yet to betray his trust (that he knows of), annoyingly finds her easier to confide in than the rest of the crew (even Erin), and can't quite figure out how she managed to crawl under his skin so quickly. Nonetheless, she is the person he wakes up to most mornings.

Rhys Bejain
Old Friend
Once a member of the Bajoran Resistance, then a Starfleet officer, and then back to resistance work again -- this time through the Maquis -- it was Bejain who recruited Walter to the cause.

Valen Carys
Wife
Deceased
Carys and Walter met when he was assigned to a ship patrolling the Federation border, what would later become the Demilitarised Zone. They fell in love, and married in a traditional Bajoran ceremony. She was killed fighting the Cardassians a few years back, and he shifts between relief and guilt than he's moved on.

History

Walter Brunsig was an exceptional Starfleet officer, but his abrupt manner did him little favours in the fleet, often finding himself passed over or side-lined for more amiable persons. Posted to the border near Cardassian space, he saw how difficult life can be away from the beating heart of the Federation. After the Federation-Cardassian Treaty, his former CO, Rhys Bejain, reached out to Walter to test the recruitment waters and found a man all too willing to believe the Federation had abandoned its people because it was convenient.

Thus, Walter has been Maquis for almost as long as the Maquis have existed. His skills as a Starfleet officer catapulted him into a leadership position, his gruff manner no longer the dead weight around his potential it had once been. He captains the Skarbek and its ragtag crew, pulling off some of the more daring escapades the Maquis attempt, and the Cardassians would dearly love to capture him and make an example. Alas, the only time they came close, they lost a warship.
