{{Heading|Background|Blue}}
Arus was born on Betazed and grew up in his family’s house near Lake El’nar. His mother is a surgeon and a minor member of the Third House of Betazed, the House of Health. The association was enough to help her standing in the medical community on Betazed, but not much else. His father owns and runs a mid-sized but successful interstellar shipping company. Arus is the youngest of two children with a brother, Atul, who is about 5 years older than Arus. His childhood was happy and relatively normal. As he grew, he realized he was much more interested in the work his mother did than the ‘family business’ his father ran. Luckily, Atul was fascinated by the intricacies of business, and Arus didn’t have to worry about disappointing a man he greatly respected.
When he was 12, his mother was part of a delegation that went to Starfleet Medical to present at a conference. She brought young Arus with her to see the wider universe and get a taste of the possibilities he might explore. The trip was transformative for him. His telepathic powers had started emerging around the same time, and that made everything he experienced just that much more vibrant and real. The cadets, the teachers, the staff…even the few patients he was near, they were all so intent and intense. He decided then and there that he wanted to be one of them.
From that point on, he redoubled his efforts with his school work. He was focussed. He excelled at most everything he tried, except physics, which he struggled with terribly. He had to resort to just rote memorization of formulas rather than truly conceptualizing it all. Still, he did well enough to pass, graduate near the top of his class, and do well enough on the entrance exams to get in to Starfleet Academy. He spent the next 8 years at the Academy and Starfleet Medical. There were the usual late nights studying, and the usual late nights getting into all kinds of mischief and trouble with friends. He’d been so serious and focused on getting into the Academy, that once he was there he finally had to learn how to unwind and let go of some of the pressure he’d put on himself.
He’d had a whole, relaxed future in his mind with Lachlan Riley, a man he’d started dating his first year in Starfleet Medical, until Lachlan decided to dump him 6 months before he graduated. Arus was heartbroken, but bounced back, buoyed by his friends who rallied around him. Sitting in a restaurant in San Francisco with his best friend, Rigen, and an ice cream sundae the size of his head, he remembered why he’d come to the Academy in the first place. He remembered the way he’d felt, the adventure, and nervous excitement at exploring the galaxy. He hadn’t finished his paperwork regarding his assignment preferences yet since he’d been hoping on some level that this was all some kind of prank. With his sense of renewed excitement, though, Arus went home that night and filled out the paperwork asking for a more remote posting, a ship or station out near the edge of Federation influence would be just the thing to reignite his passion for life.
