Before meeting with Lieutenant Richards, newly aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler, Chief of Security, LCDR Aine Sherlock, has a comm call with an old academy acquaintance to discuss the recent behaviour and actions of Starfleet Security following the aftermath of the Romulan Free State. After finishing the comm call, Sherlock welcomes Richards aboard and initiates his orientation. The pair head to the Operations Center, discussing the quirks of the Ops personnel and the ship's new equipment, including site-to-site transporter arches, updated phasers and the need for crew training.
Richards shares his previous experience on the USS Thor and notes the efficiency and advanced features of the Butler, and the need for a final check-up in Sickbay. In the Operations Centre, Lieutenant JG Lhandon Nilsen and Chief of Operations, LT Toxin Arlill. Nilsen organizes room assignments and supply deliveries, displaying his efficient system for managing Ops tasks. As Richards and Sherlock leave, Nilsen, noticing Arlill's unusual behavior, expresses concern, but Arlill brushes it off, indicating he has work to do. The tension between Arlill and Nilsen continues as they discuss operational matters, with Arlill hinting at issues with the quartermaster's master file. Despite Nilsen's attempts to help, Arlill remains defensive and insistent on handling the situation himself.

After visiting the Operations Centre, Lieutenant Commander Aine Sherlock and Lieutenant Anton Richards head to 8-Forward for some food and drinks, where they discuss the power and classified and Borg nature of the ship's components. Sherlock initially requests Romulan ale, which Koryan, the barkeep, humorously declines the public ask due to its illegality, offering whiskey instead. As they settle in, Koryan expresses pleasure in seeing them again, noting their previous encounter on the USS Thor.
Whilst getting their drinks, Koryan reflects briefly on his own past and future as Sherlock inquires about Richards' goals as he returns to service. Richards shares his ambitions, reflecting on his career path and future plans. Anton wasn't quite sure what direction path he wanted to take. He didn't really have dreams of being a captain, but he wanted to help out as much as he could. He shares that he goes with the flow, to which Sherlock appreciates and shares the same sentiment. They invite Koryan into the conversation, who seems to share the same approach as the other two.
The scene fades out with Sherlock deciding to have another drink, and the trio reflection on life choices big and small.
