Divya Tam was born to Starfleet Marines, who retired after the Dominion Wars. One of her mothers, Laila Jafe, is an experimental engineer. She happily tinkers, invents, and comes up with solutions to people's problems. Divya's home had a mechanic shop on the side where people came to Laila to solve problems they could not go to anyone else with. The house is on a small plot of land just outside of the city of Taakat. Her other mother was special ops in the Dominion War. Samira told her tales from growing up in the mountains, her time in the Academy, and her early days in the fleet. She never speaks about the war. Divya's talents came from her mother, Samira, who runs a martial arts studio in the city. She mixed different forms of martial arts form many cultures to create an excellent form of defense.  

Barzan II, with its harsh climate and demanding culture, instills a unique tenacity in its inhabitants. Divya, growing up in this environment, was no exception. The planet's culture, centered around strong family and community bonds, values strength, protection, and self-reliance. During her coming of age ceremony Barzan adolescents chose which of their parents paths will be followed or if a new path will be forged. Divya, to no one's surprise chose to follow in her warrior mother's footsteps. This is when she took on the name Tam.
