In many ways Murphy saved Finch's life; marred by her depressing life on Earth, bound into looking after her miserable and mentally unsound mother, Murphy was a light at the end of the tunnel. Sharing the experience of Starfleets Tech Service Academy together, they went on to serve together on the USS Bonestell, until they were moved onto different ships. Though they always stayed in touch and often visited each other, their careers entwined again aboard the USS Marigold. A known taunter and lover of mischief, Murphy highly cherished Doz and enjoyed making fun of her workaholic nature. Often preferring her company over anyone elses, the two were quite inseparable and naturally balanced each other out. Though she rarely admits it, he rubbed off on her a great deal; it was Murphy who instilled Doz's need to find nooks and crannies and hidden places in ships to relax with shipmates; that and her proclivity for drinking her tea with milk and sugar, despite having always taken it black before that. His life came to an end on-board the Marigold in an event that frankly ripped Doz's world apart, and is the sole reason she accepted an offer to commission, desperate for a distraction she swore she would never pursue.
