* '''239203.04''' -- Reports to USS Hinode, an impulse only vessel assigned to the Solar System as a platform for graduate and undergraduate students to study the Earth's sun. As such, the vessel never travels further than Mars' orbit. Gervan serves as the vessels Chief Engineer and Master-At-Arms, the latter position of which mainly consists in breaking up fights among the students while they are on board, and bailing out the rowdier ones when they're down planetside. Normally, the position required someone with the minimum rank of Chief Petty Officer, and was usually held by a Senior Chief Petty Officer with security cross training. However, the Hinode was due for maintenance within a few months, the number of students who would be on board was lighter than usual, and Gervan's application for the position came with the recommendation of a highly regarded senior officer in Starfleet's engineering community. In the end, it was decided to give the soon-to-bed cadet some practical, if limited, "command" experience

* '''239208.27''' -- Reports to Starfleet Academy
Gervan was born and raised on Lemnos Colony, one of the many "lost colonies" rediscovered by Starfleet during the middle part of the century. Gervan's Uncle Alban always lamented that, if Lemnos had just been rediscovered by a different starship, he was certain that he would have had three wives, rather than being a lifelong bachelor.

Lemnos Colony was "rugged," to say the least, with gravity higher than Earth normal, and a thinner atmosphere. Starfleet Corps of Engineers supplemented the original colonists' terraforming efforts, making the planet more palatable for new colonists, as well as Starfleet personnel stationed on the minor Fleet depot and repair yard eventually located in orbit around Lemnos. According to Gervan's Uncle Alban, the Federation might have edged them out on everything else, but the men and women of Lemnos had taught those Starfleet Engineers a thing or two when it came to terraforming.

At the age of eighteen, Gervan decided he didn't want to spend his life on a backwater colony in the family business (tending to sheep-like creatures noted for their colorful and unusual coats). So Gervan enlisted in Starfleet. Though Gervan was more than satisfied with the prospects of an enlisted career, the Chief Engineer of the USS Hygeia took Gervan under her wing, introducing him to a variety of subjects and eventually convincing Gervan to apply for Starfleet's program of recruiting officer candidates from its enlisted ranks.
