Garev's upbringing was strangely very insular for a child with both parents in the employ of Starfleet. With his mother and father away most of the time, he spent his formative years in academic institutions or being raised by his maternal grandmother. His first time off Vulcan was after he had attained his degree and left to join Starfleet Medical Academy. Once at the Academy, he completed a further four years of medical training, before being given his first posting as a Medical Officer on board the USS Hephaestus, an Odyssey-class Explorer, before being transferred to the [[USS Thunder-A]]. It was his father's wish that he should follow him into the medical field as well as Starfleet. Garev did attempt to resist this, the reason he gave his father was that he felt other races were too volatile and would see his superior intellect as a threat - despite having very little first-hand experience with anyone other than fellow Vulcans. However, in reality, it was Garev's own insecurities that made him fearful of leaving his home planet, not that he would ever admit that.

Garev can come across as aloof and arrogant to his fellow crew members. He believes the Vulcan way of life to be superior to all others and is very close-minded to new ideas. He is a loner and prefers to spend his time studying or meditating as opposed to socialising. His blunt style of communication and lack of bedside manner has seen several colleagues lodge complaints against him, which eventually led to his transfer from the USS Hephaestus to the [[USS Thunder-A]]. Most of these social deficiencies come from his insular and staunchly Vulcan upbringing.
