Since the first day that Varaan had stepped on board the Paladin, {{nrank|Chief Warrant Officer 3rd Grade|Phillipe|Marquette}} has been the rock that Varaan has leaned on in Engineering. Seen as something between a father-figure and a brother, the Chief has been a solid supporter of Varaan's. The two men share a very friendly and unique relationship, something Varaan has found hard to do with all except a few. The Chief has the utmost respect for Varaan, even though his running commentaries would often be seen by outsiders as inappropriate between an enlisted man and an officer. But Varaan doesn't mind. In fact, Varaan sees the familiarity in the banter as an elevated communication style - two people in sync enough that simple words and phrases can carry complex meanings. There is no other being in the galaxy that either man would trust more. the Chief has followed Varaan through transfers on more than one occasion. | |||

After being alone for so long as a deep cover operative within the [[Par'tha Expanse]], Varaan's return to "normal society" and the Starfleet "mainstream" has revealed that all of his old acquaintances and shipmates from the past have moved on in one way or another...except one. {{nrank|Commander|Marcus|Dickens}}, who was a fresh faced Ensign when ''Atlantis'' originally launched in 2382, had returned to ''Atlantis'' upon the relaunch in 2391. While calling their relationship a "friendship" might have been pushing it, Dickens was the closest thing to a friend that Varaan had. Unfortunately, Marcus went MIA during a mission when they were both assigned to the {{USS|Apollo|A}}.
