Personal History

Gordon was born to Laurence and Melinda Bennett on Earth after a difficult pregnancy.

Laurence Bennett was a distinguished professor of mathematics, splitting time between several major universities. Melinda Bennett was a contract consultant for Starfleet Logistics. At three, Gordon went to live with his aunt (Celia) in Tycho City because of health reasons that were never fully explained to Gordon, and never seemed to manifest.

For the medical records Gordon was listed as Human, however several footnotes raised questions, suggesting that his baseline physiology deviated from Human to some degree. Questions surrounding any physiological anomalies never surfaced and remained as forgotten footnotes in his medical history.

Private tutors taught Gordon, thanks to his aunt Celia’s connections. As he progressed through the various areas of study, he fell in love with mathematics. At 10, Gordon transferred to a traditional academic environment.

It was a struggle for Gordon to excel in mathematics, but this never quelled his love of the subject. He persevered, putting in extra work to remain out of the bottom ranks in his class. His obsession with puzzles and games did not help him at all, often late or missing classes because he couldn’t pull himself away from a puzzle or win a game. It didn’t help that Aunt Celia seemed to have an endless supply of new puzzles to challenge him.

As Gordon grew up, it was clear he would have to decide what path his life would take. He wished to pursue the path of his father. The life of an academic had a powerful appeal.

During one of the rare times Gordon’s parents visited him in Tycho City, they presented him with a choice.

The life of an academic or Starfleet. HIs parents and aunt _strongly_ suggested that he choose Starfleet.

He didn’t feel like he really had a choice. He was going to enlist in Starfleet.

As the time approached for Gordon to enter Starfleet Academy, his parents and aunt Celica repeatedly told him he would do great things for Starfleet and the Federation. There seemed to be no doubt in their minds.

Gordon delayed his start at Starfleet Academy. He negotiated time to “Work on his social skills and improve his self-confidence.” Aunt Celia, agreed and arranged for him to work with a counselor. One she had selected. Gordon was convinced that the counseling sessions did little to improve his self-image, and rather than endure the tedious office visits, he began responding to what he knew the counselor wanted to hear. The sessions ended shortly after. Aunt Celia gave every indication that she was pleased with his progress. Gordon knew that she received detailed session reports from his counselor and didn’t quite believe her.

A short note from his parents was the last he heard from before heading to the academy. They gave him a curious gift, several “paper” notebooks and a set for custom writing pens engraved with his name. The attached note read - “Gordon, we know you will do great things for Starfleet and the Federation.” A PS from his mother read, “You will find a personal and private log valuable, I always have.” Every year after Gordon received a new set of notebooks with the same (identical) note from is parents.

It wasn’t until near the end of his first year at the academy that Gordon stumbled upon some information he could never have imagined. While researching the history of Starfleet and the Federation, he found a duty roster that listed Lieutenant Commander Celia Allwood - Star Fleet Intelligence. Further digging lead to a profile document for Commander Celia Allwood. There he learned Commander Allwood’s husband died in the line of duty, leaving her to raise their daughter Melinda alone. The puzzle of “Aunt” Celia was one that was going to dog Gordon for a long time.

“Aunt” Celia would have little contact with Gordon during his time at the academy. The rare communications from her where hardly personal and most often a new puzzle to solve.

Gordon completed his time at Starfleet Academy with a major in Intelligence and a supporting Science minor. His record would reflect exemplary abilities in Crypto-analysis, SIGINT, pattern recognition and information analysis. When asked about his time at the academy, Gordon was fond of saying “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"
