Background

Deziri Oren was born on the Mizarian homeworld of Mizabet. Mizarian culture being rooted in suspicion and a desire for stability when considering change. Deziri, however was always an outlier. Her constant asking of “Why” and “how” to every cultural taboo left her with a small amount of friends and left her in a cloud of distain amongst everyone she met.

Her elders saw her as a troublemaker, stirring unnecessary drama at every-turn, why she elected to consistently push and ask questions about their ways-which had sustained them for generations. She was pushed into being an engineer by per parents, hoping that her constant line of questioning could be brought closer to home. Being a Mizarian, she adapted to this social barrier, taking a particular interest in trains, something she wasn’t always open about, but working of Mizabets rail network, eventually working her way into logistics and infrastructure maintenance.

One day, when she was tinkering with a sub-space relay, a secret side project of hers, she intercepted an incoming hail from a civilian freighter. They offered to anyone down on the planet interested (and with the appropriate credentials) the opportunity to become a contractor. Being one of the only people to hear it, she accepted it. Faking her death for the opportunity to explore the stars with a steady salary was too good of an offer to refuse.

Deziri was never certain of their decision to leave Mizabet, always keeping tabs on the closest way back, however after a few months, she realised life off-planet was better than she ever could have thought. She no longer cared for going back, just taking more jobs as they came, and seeing as much of the quadrant as possible. Yet, despite this growing passion, Deziri is still a Mizarian at heart. They don’t make waves.

They avoid conflict at all costs, rarely taking sides in disputes. If someone asks their opinion, they’ll shrug and say, “It’s just a train. It gets people from point A to B. Who cares how?”

Mizarians don’t leave home.

Mizarians don’t have strong ambition.

Mizarians don’t wander.

Despite all of this, Deziri doesn’t see themself as an exception.

They’re just doing a job.

That’s all.

Right?
