"We will fight the curse, even as our lives pass in the wink of an eye."
a Scalosian saying.
The Scalosian are a species that due to an ecological disaster now face both extinction and exclusion from the universe around them.

History

In the 22nd century, Scalos was a normal Class M world that sustained a humanoid civilization advanced in the areas of cryogenics and medical technology. However, in 2268 the planet experienced a series of devastating volcanic eruptions which released an unknown form of radiation into the water supply affecting both the Scalosians and the local animal and insect life. All life on the planet, due to the radiation, had its metabolism sped up once ingesting the contaminated water. Mere days became years or even decades for those affected by the water. Shortly after the disaster, all animal and insect life perished, whereas the Scalosians resorted to luring alien vessels into orbit around their planet in a desperate attempt to procreate their species.

Once a nation of 900,000, their numbers rapidly declined until there were only five of them left by 2268. Deela was their queen.

Through an ironic twist of fate, Scalosian women experienced increased fertility following the disaster, while Scalosian men became infertile. While alien ships would be cyrogenically frozen, men from captured alien vessels would be periodically taken, accelerated up to the speed of the Scalosians using the local water, and were then expected to father hundreds of children through the surviving Scalosian women.

Eventually running short of alien men (less than 40 days after the initial disaster in 2268), the Scalosians then resorted to using a distress call to further lure others to their planet. The crew of the USS Enterprise, under Captain James T. Kirk, responded to the distress beacon (only 64 days after the initial disaster) and had to fend off an attempt to hijack their vessel by Scalosians intruders. Informing Starfleet of the Scalosians' true intentions, the planet was subsequently quarantined.

By the 24th century Scalos was a dead, quarantined world where even archaeological digs could not be sanctioned for fear of the Scalosian water and any surviving Scalosians. During the Dominion War, Starfleet or Section 31 considered visiting the planet so as to make use of the contaminated water in covert attacks against the enemy.

In the 2290s, the Federation was working with the Scalosians on relocating their entire civilization to another planet.

Government

They originally had a monarchy that was supported by a class of nobility. However all that remains of this system is the monarchy. Due to the unusual nature of their civilizations near destruction the monarchy was almost destroyed.

Somehow it survived and with the slow increase of their population from near extinction it has become a symbol of their struggle and the hope for their future.

Description

They appear to be typical terran looking humanoids who for the most part are tall, slim and athletic looking.

Physiology

The water on the planet Scalos was drastically altered due to volcanic fall out. As a result a unique form of radiation altered it in such a way that when imbibed, it hyper-accelerates the drinker so that they move so fast that they cannot be seen by anyone who is not so accelerated. The acceleration is caused by radioactive contamination which, with long term exposure, causes sterility in males.

Those newly accelerated are highly susceptible to cell damage. A simple scratch would be fatal, resulting in apparent rapid aging.

While under hyper-acceleration, phaser beams move slowly enough relative to the subject's perception of time that they can be easily avoided by simply stepping aside.

Psychology

Almost no records remain to show if they have any hereditary mental issues. As a result they are slowly having to relearn all the skills needed to deal with, recognize and treat any of these issues as they develop.

Religion

Due to the unusual nature of their near extinction and the hyper accelerated lives that remained all traces of their original style of beliefs have been abandoned. A few records remain from which they might try to someday resurrect those beliefs but most of the data has been lost or destroyed.

Mythology

Almost no records remain to indicate if they did have any form of mythology.

Society

They have had to slowly build a new society. Their original way of life was almost wiped out and with their slow growth from near extinction they are slowly developing a new distinct identity as a people.

Culture

While this is only just now slowly becoming an area of interest again, due to the loss of almost every form of artistic expression they previously had they are having to relearn and create new styles and methods of expressing creative artistic thoughts.

Customs

As with their society they are creating new customs as time progresses. All their old ones were abandoned or lost during the extreme emergency that reduced their population to a mere 5 citizens.

Technology

Once they were a civilization advanced in the areas of cryogenics and medical technology. Now they are far behind where they use to be in all fields of endeavors. Too many other concerns must take precedent and old skills and knowledge has mostly been lost due to the unusual nature of their near extinction.

Economy

Currently they do not have much in the way of trade. They are mostly concerned with rebuilding their industrial and basic needs production facilities.

Military

None. No records remain to confirm it but since their contact with off world species prior to the disaster that almost wiped them out show no military forces at all it has been speculated that either they were peaceful or they had survived a war that threatened to destroy them as a people. Regardless they currently do not have any military at all.
