Background

Lina at the age of 9 with her older brother Anders, who died two years later due to an accident.

Lina Dahlquist was born as a second child to Frederik and Maria Dahlquist in Goteborg, Sweden on Earth. This was where she grew up. Unlike her older brother Anders, Lina was a very introverted and reserved child.  Her older brother always wanted to be in the center of the attention very much like their father. Lina herself had never had the closest relationship to her older brother, but she and her younger sister Malin are very close.

Her older brother always seemed to be her father’s favourite child, but Anders died due to a tragic accident when he was eighteen years old. This was of course a blow for the whole family. From one day to the next, the childhood ended for Lina. Because of the loss of his oldest son, his father suffered from depression. Then Eleven-year-old Lina also felt guilty for not having had the best relationship with her older brother.  Her deceased brother was put on a pedestal by her father and it seemed that Lina, being so completely different from her brother, could never be ‘adequate’ and was not able to do anything correctly in her father’s eyes. Lina was constantly compared to her ‘perfect’ older brother.

This lead to the fact that Lina really started to believe in her inadequacy. She has a lot of self-doubts and has to fight the thought that her father might have been right and she is not good enough at anything. This is the reason why she developed a work ethic that values hard work as she constantly tries to overcome that feeling of being inadequate. She wants to proof it to herself (as well as to her father). She tends to be overcommitting though.

Lina also had to learn that showing her real emotions would only make her more vulnerable, so she became an expert in hiding her real feelings. She really values harmony and does not like conflicts. Towards others, Lina could be described as a helpful, warm and empathetic person, as she knows what it feels like when nobody really cares about you.

Lina bases her decisions on personal values and it usually takes a lot of time before she finally decides on something. In her childhood she fled into the world of books and read a lot. She dreamt herself to other worlds and places, which was also the reason why she finally decided to join Starfleet Academy. However, she did not join the Academy right after school as she was not really sure what to do. Her father also made him belief that she would not be good enough for Starfleet. She also likes to make plans and thinks that rules and deadlines should be respected, which made it very easy for her at the Academy. However, she is extremely nervous, when she is confronted with unknown situations – like the final exam.

Sheathed Sword 2391
USS Gemini
Traditionally, the Sheathed Sword is given to those who are injured and explore the aftermath of that event. Vanessa Driscoll (now Linus Dahlquist) changed the order a little bit of a different order, but created a narrative that was just as compelling. During out mission, Lt. Driscoll was infected with a pathogen that was, essentially, a death sentence. Over the course of her remaining posts, she explored the implications of facing her own mortality, where the only question was when she would succumb to the effects of the pathogen.

Most of us have a vague idea that our time in this world is limited. But very few of us face such mortality in the same way, with enough time to be aware of it, but with not enough to truly do anything about it. As such, it is my honour to present the Sheathed Sword to Vanessa Driscoll.
