Relationships

Family

Spouse: None
Children: None

Mother: Lukita Dalis (Joined)
Father: Darzen Tarna
Siblings: Neron Hermis (Joined) (Older brother)

Family Background:

Janel comes from a very successful family and receives a lot of pressure from his mother Lukita Dalis who is joined, has a very dominant personality and strong ideas about what she wants for her boys. She's highly ambitious with a very prominent career as a negotiator and diplomat, which has seen her travel on and off-world to work on some of the biggest and most important cases. She believes joining is one of the biggest indicators of success because the process to become joined is so competitive and rigorous. Having successful, joined sons reflects well on her and enhances her own notoriety too. Only a relatively tiny portion of the population are accepted and achieve it and she firmly wants her sons to be among them.

Like most Trill, Janel would love to be joined, particularly as both his mother and older brother, who he deeply admires and looks up to are. He feels under pressure to succeed when he'd often much rather be having a quiet time stuck up a tree somewhere studying wildlife. He often worries that he's not good enough for joining and that his family will be so disappointed in him if he fails that he'll be disowned.

Friends and Acquaintances

Friend
Avaris Torrin
Janel Tarna and Avaris Torrin initially met through the Trill civilian's partner Artem Dragumov who was also studying at the academy. Janel has always appreciated the older Trill's opinion even when he didn't agree with it. In fact this unique world view undoubtedly forms part of the reason that Janel feels he can comfortably be himself around Avaris. The pair recently caught up with each other after graduation to see where the other had ended up and how they were settling in. It didn't take long for the touchy subject of joining to be brought up.

Background

Educational Background:
  • Trill Primary and Secondary Schools
  • Starfleet Academy & StarFleet Medical
    • Took Science expansion courses throughout his time training with Starfleet to become a doctor. These courses were geared towards biological and environmental sciences primarily.

Languages known: Trill, Federation Standard

As a child he was a bit of a dreamer and always last to finish his school work as a result of his wandering mind. Academically he was always behind his high flying brother, scoring average and slightly below average in some classes. A lot of the classes did not interest him and he spent his evenings studying and learning all he could about local and exotic plants and creatures because that's where his true passion lies. At the weekends he'd go bird spotting, taking his best camera with him to capture all the sights. He was a frequent visitor to local zoos, safaris and wildlife centers. Any time he was off planet with family on holiday it was the wildlife he wanted to see first. He always imagined himself as this great adventurer, travelling the worlds, studying the animals then making programs, exhibitions and writing books to showcase and educate people about the natural wonders.

Unfortunately, his poor grades soon scored him a lot of extra tutoring and his freedom was restricted based on how well he was doing with his studies. While this had the desired effect of getting him to pay more attention and knuckle down in class, boosting his grades, it didn't quite net the level of improvement his parents were looking for. He ended up scoring well and was the student who showed the biggest improvements. If symbiots were given out to people based on effort and the volume of work they completed then Janel would be one of the first ones to receive because in those respects he could not be faulted.

Janel's proudest achievement through school is the small 1st place trophy and upgraded equipment he won for his entry into the annual photography competition, which is held among all of the schools in the region. He had to beat hundreds of other entries and did so with a stunning picture of a large white bird of prey; its wide-spread grey tipped wings and tail feathers appeared to shimmer silver in the sun. He'd caught the bird in the act of swooping down and catching a fish that had been trying to leap its way upstream. The picture had shown skill and probably more than a little luck as it was a great quality action shot that couldn't have been timed any better. He has a blown up, printed copy of that photo framed and insists on taking with him everywhere to brighten up his living space and remind him that he can do wondrous things, with patience and perseverance.

Despite hopes that the pressure might lessen after his older brother was joined, things only seemed set to intensify as the triumph fueled his mother's ambition to have two joined sons. As a result she is constantly pushing advice on him and trying to control his career to ensure he makes it through the process - because just being an officer in Starfleet isn't enough these days. Much of Janel's motivation to join Starfleet was in the fact that it would put some distance between him and his family, giving him some breathing space. He chose to train as a medic as a result of familial influences rather than a true reflection of what he really wanted to do. Being unambitious by nature and unsure of what he wanted it was all too easy for him to allow himself to be overly influenced by others who felt it was the most worthy path. When he saw the chance to take extension courses at the Academy he opted for the biological and environmental science courses, less because it might enhance his career prospects or selection chances for joining and more because it allowed him to follow one of his passions in life.

During his time at the Academy he was involved in the mountaineering and diving clubs as well as the photography club, helping them to set up and run a few of their exhibitions. During his time at the Academy he really made a point of learning everything he could to the detriment of his social life. He took as many extension courses as possible, focusing on biological, zoological and environmental science based courses. He is specialized in infectious diseases and finished with average grades that were more a reflection of the extra work he had to put in to get there rather than a natural flair for the subject matter. His friends have referred to him as the master of anatomy in jest since he is as comfortable dealing with animals as he is people, if not more.

One day, whilst completing his clerkship at Starfleet Academy he unexpectedly found use for his unique skill-set and was called upon to check the health of a poorly animal brought to Earth by a student. Janel had often felt that animals and space travel don't mix too well and when he had to amputate the leg of the student's dog after it was involved in an accident it seemed to prove his point. It certainly didn't put the owner off as the grateful student would from that point on, regularly send through a photo of him with his three legged companion with his best wishes as a mark of gratitude.

Even though his career is only beginning he's already seen other people dropped from the symbiosis selection program and is terrified he'll be next. He always feels like everyone else is better than him and that he's not doing enough to be fit for selection. This makes him feel compelled to pick up extra work and projects, leaving him frequently over-committed.

He finds it hard at times to give every project the time and attention it really deserves and is trying to be increasingly selective in what he chooses to take on. He now aims for medical research groups where he can easily participate, favoring those led by high profile scientists as he feels it will get him noticed more, and by the people who could help propel him and his career to dizzying heights. He is certain that would impress the symbiosis committee and lead to him being selected for joining. His biggest personal research project involves the study or and work towards finding a cure for one of the most notoriously difficult to treat diseases of modern times. He's been working on it for some months and not seen the sort of progress on it that he'd hoped for, partially due to other commitments he's taken on in addition. Frustrating as it is he is confident that he'll be able to get there in time and some of his most recent simulations show promise.

Janel spends so much time trying to build an impressive portfolio and present the sort of confident, super intelligent and capable individual that the symbiosis committee is looking for that he's left himself with almost no free time to relax, socialize and enjoy the things that really matter to him and sometimes he doesn't even get enough sleep. The selection process is getting noticeably more challenging and since conversations with family back home all revolve about what he's doing to advance, he's always left feeling like he's not doing enough and that he's hanging in by the thinnest of threads.

Medical and Psychological Background

Psychological Profile:

Personality overview:

Janel is a bright, friendly and positive soul who always has a smile on his face. He is family oriented, craving the love and respect of his own family as well as hoping to have his own one day. Janel isn't very competitive by nature and it takes a nudge to get him going but once he is, he's completely committed to being the best. The fact that he is practical, well organised, an excellent time keeper and a hard worker has helped him succeed. He's patient and perseveres long after many others would have given up. He enjoys keeping records and is always writing notes.

It's common for people to want their family to be proud of them but none more than Janel. He secretly wants to be admired by his family, friends and the world at large, this makes him a bit of a try hard and he'll do anything to impress and get closer to his ultimate goal but unfortunately it can lead to him promising more than he's able to deliver. In an effort to do his family proud and succeed in being selected for joining he has chosen to train as a doctor rather than following his heart. This can leave him feeling emotionally unfulfilled and prone to burnout.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Talents/Abilities:

  • Fully qualified Doctor and medical researcher.
  • Specialised in Infectious Diseases.
  • Knowledgeable life scientist and passable Vet.
  • Skilled at photography and holography.

Janel has a protective side that shines through when he is working in a crisis. He is outspoken and quick to share his ideas and opinions, he tries to always put his patients needs first and will cause a fuss and protest if he thinks his patients are getting a bad deal in any way. He has had high expectations placed on him his whole life and while he's not always met them he's able to cope with a great deal of pressure and stress before it starts to wear him down. As a result he is well suited to the often stressful environment of sickbay and it an excellent choice for disaster, relief missions. The few friends he has made find him to be very faithful and honest.

He has good intentions at heart but can be headstrong and blunt in the way he communicates and arrogant in giving advice - especially the sort not asked for. While his being outwardly showy might be an attempt to hide his own insecurities it doesn't always endear him well to others. Janel can become jealous of others at times, for example, if he perceives them as excelling in an area he wants to do well in and especially if he thinks rightly or wrongly that it comes easily to them.

Ambitions:

Janel Tarna applied to the symbiosis commission as a young man in the hope of being selected for joining as this is his greatest ambition in life and the driving force that makes him strive for excellence in everything he does. Other ambitions and dreams he might have pursued, such as developing his holography skills and writing for environmental and wildlife publications come secondary to this goal. On 239205.15 his hope for joining came crashing down. Janel couldn't understand why Captain Nugra wasn't supporting his request to take leave to attend important evaluations that would lead to joining - if he successfully passed. With his decision making processes impeded by brain damage he'd suffered during the mission Scourge of Romulus, he took unauthorised leave and went AWOL to pursue his dream. Having not properly thought things through he made a series of errors, plotting a dangerous course, missing important alarms notifying of danger as he passed through known pirate territory and then through a treacherous nebula. Arriving late and in a shuttle that was barely held together Janel emerged and met with examiners who flatly removed him from the process, citing his recent actions as prime examples of why he is not a suitable candidate for joining.

Hobbies and Interests:

Likes:

  • Cross-country and trail running
  • Holography
  • Hiking, hillwalking and climbing.
  • Camping
  • Diving
  • Anything else that lets him explore nature.
  • Singing in the shower.

Dislikes:

  • Overly sweet food or food that’s still alive.
  • Alcoholic beverages.
  • Klingon Opera, rave, trance or any other music that could be described as ‘a loud grating noise’.
  • Exploring the great outdoors both above and below the sea is Janel's greatest love and it's where his passion really lies. He likes walking, mountaineering, climbing and diving etc. It doesn't matter where he goes, he always has at least one camera with him as he loves to capture still photographs and record footage of the wildlife he spots. He likes to get involved with conservation and education programs as much as possible and has been involved in projects involving holography, holoconferencing, and publicity. The nature of his job means that he can't get as hands on or involved as he would like but he helps in whatever way he can in the limited free time he permits himself.

Medical/Psychological Reports:

"Janel Tarna's physical health and fitness is within Federation Standards. Psychologically he is able to cope with a lot of pressure but needs to manage his expectations and workload better. It has been noted that he doesn't eat or sleep as well as he should at times and has been warned that this could lower his immune system, make him more prone to illness, injury, reduce his ability to cope with stress and potentially lead to burnout. That being said I see no reason not to declare this individual fit for duty." - Dr J.A. Hazeim, Academy physician reporting on Janel Tarna’s physical and mental readiness to pass through the Academy and be placed into active service.

USS Victory

Eventful First Days

Seashells From Duronis II

After barely four months service aboard Janel Tarna is reassigned to the USS Victory and even on his first day, finds his experience vastly different to what he'd become used to. Where he hadn't met the Captain of the Spectre during his time aboard he met Captain Nugra immediately after the shuttle carrying him had docked. He found the exceptionally tall lizard to be a little intimidating at first and suffered badly from first day nerves. The Captain had him join the rest of the senior officers at a promotions and awards ceremony, there he met Commander Alucard Vess, Lieutenant Commander Paul Sharpe, First Lieutenant S'arila Donovan and cadet Charlotte DeBarres. It was blatantly obvious to all how socially awkward and nervous he was.

When he retired for the night he tried to contact his friends Avaris Torrin and Artem Dragumov but without luck all he could do was recall their past conversation and send a message for them to read later. The next morning he had a meeting with the Chief of Security Paul Sharpe who sorted out his security clearances for him. The young Doctor was in for a shock when later, in sickbay, he learned that he would effectively be running the medical department as its sole doctor. During a brief orientation session with Talia Kaji he met his new colleagues head nurse Sarah Red Elk and nurse Naiara Franklin.

Because they were on shoreleave rotation Janel was soon released to that he might spend some time on Duronis II. The USS Victory was in orbit of the planet and had come to celebrate a particularly rare and special event - the promotions of Fleet Captain Toni Turner to Rear Admiral and Commander Nugra to Captain. During his time there he managed to spend some time on the beach, enjoying the views of the beautiful coastline. While he wished he'd taken his camera down to the surface with him he did manage to pick a few nice shells, shaped similrly to scallops from the sand as he sat and chatted with Paul Sharpe, Andromeda Lightfeather, Chris Kildare and S'arila Donovan. Because he was in a much smaller group of people and an environment in which he felt comfortable and happy, his demeanor was much more relaxed than previously.

What Happened At Luxis III

Patient
Brooks Gwinnett
Janel Tarna was exceptionally excited to have the opportunity to join his first away team since graduating from the Academy. It was headed by the Duronis II Embassy's first officer Hannibal Parker. The team was to investigate the source of a strange signal but had barely touched down and begun their area search when the weather took a turn for the worst. A thunderous roar alerted the team to an incoming tsunami. They prepared the rib as the wall of water approached and took shelter aboard the vessel. Unfortunately Brooks Gwinnett slipped and banged her head in a freak accident. The helmet she wore cracked but held together. Doctor Tarna attended to her immediately and kept her stabilized until they could get her evacuated. Her injuries were horrific, the worst Tarna had seen in his short career but he kept it together and as a result of his actions the marine's life was saved. He visited her in the care ward on Utopia Planetia when the Victory docked there and she was transferred to their larger, better equipped and staffed facility although she was not conscious at the time.

Scourge of Romulus

Janel Tarna got another shot at joining an away team and after the disappointment from how the first one turned out he was eager to get to work and prove himself to his new crew this time. LtCmdr Eerie was in charge of the away team, which was tasked with searching for 5 stolen vials of a plague, currently curable using an effective serum called the Skyfire Virus. The worry was that in the hands of the wrong people the virus would be tampered with, creating a new strain of disease that could devastate populations as the plague had done before the cure had been developed. Arriving on the planet their Romulan counterparts seemed pleasant enough on the surface. He could tell there were others in his team who really did not trust them but he tried to keep an open mind and give them the benefit of the doubt.

In the process of their search, Janel came up with an idea regarding where the vials might be hidden. He and Ensign Lael Rosek went to investigate only to find another Romulan already on the scene, with a box in her hands. The Trill medic tried to find out what was in the box but she fled the scene. Janel and Lael gave chase with Janel dropping his medical pack which was cumbersome and slowing him down. He was knocked unconscious by another Romulan hiding in the shadows of a nearby open room, giving the woman opportunity to flee. After stopping down to check on him Lael suffered the same fate.

The two were taken prisoner and held in a cell at some unknown location. The next days were pure misery and saw them tortured and humiliated through various means: beatings, being hung in a pitch black freezer filled with dead and diseased Romulan scientists being strung up on meat hooks, more beatings, waterboarding, starvation, being forced to perform humiliating boots like licking their captors boots continued until a mysterious figure stepped in. During this time a strange but powerful bond had developed between Trill and Al-Leyan hybrid, love one might say. They were exploring this bond when interrupted by the mysterious figure from before, who moved them out of their cell, past a bonfire upon which Lieutenant Talia Kaji appeared to be burning to a freighter.

Aboard the freighter they had a rare chance to eat. Janel had a steak and kept the knife as a weapon. He was determined to escape, while Lael wanted to use the opportunity to rest. They had nearly come to an agreement when they realized the freighter was landing and that the welcoming committee didn't look too friendly. This forced their hands and they escaped, with Lael using her engineering know-how to force open the door, and Janel using his anatomical knowledge to savagely sleigh a guard before they even had a chance to react to his presence. They made their way towards the escape pods but met with more resistance. While they overcame it they were unable to move forward as Janel's condition continued to worsen. He can't remember much after that but is understood to have been close to trying to down some industrial chemical he believed to be a popular Trill beverage at the time.

Injured and AWOL

Once rescued by Ayiana Sevo and Tarsii Asmara and safely back in sickbay, Commander Alucard Vess had to step in to perform life saving brain surgery. Despite being an accomplished surgeon the injuries were simply too great and when Janel awoke and looked at his medical records he soon learned the bad news for himself. Damage to the frontal lobe indicated a host of problems might emerge such as showing less facial expressions spontaneously, changes to personality, decision making process behaviour and even sexual behaviour. He was truly worried for his future and what this all meant for him.

After falling out with Lael upon regaining consciousness and finding her by his bedside, he later made up with her and they proceeded to get to know each other much more intimately. Any gains he might have made with their relationship were almost immediately put in jeopardy when a call from the symbiosis commission provided him with the opportunity he'd been working hard towards for years. In a series of bad decisions he went against Nugra's decision that he not be granted leave to attend the intensive series of exams without a medical pass from Commander Vess. Deciding that he wouldn't be able to get what he wanted from Vess he hired the best shuttlecraft he could get and went AWOL without another word to anybody. He was determined that nothing would get in his way and cut across pirate infested territory and through a hazardous nebula to get to his goal. He didn't realise how lucky he was to be alive until he got out of the wrecked shuttle and saw just how bad a state it was in from the outside.

When he finally arrived he was a few hours late. He was granted a meeting in which his examiners dropped him from the program, showing how each decision he'd made since they called had proven him an unsuitable candidate. The decision was final and he was handed over to starfleet security who arrested him and took him to a detention facility downtown to await the arrival of the USS Victory.

Ensign Tarna has been reassigned recalls a previous argument with his mother as he realises he's going to have to call her and let her know about what's happened. He is fearfully certain of history repeating itself.
