Named for the first moon of Betazed, the USS Avandar is the latest of the current production run of Luna-class vessels to come off of the production line at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in late 2388. Under the command of Captain Della Vetri, she was assigned to the Trinity sector at least partly to bolster Starfleet's scientific assets in the area, and also expand the fleet's capability to investigate anomalies and situations in areas a smaller exploration vessel might not be able to operate safely.


The Luna class USS Avandar

Initially conceived in 2369 the Luna-class, was originally designed to explore planets in the Gamma quadrant. The advent of the Dominion War caused Starfleet to shelve the plans for these exploratory vessels in favour of more heavily-armed starships. With the end of the war, Starfleet re-evaluated the Luna-class plans and decided to proceed with the project, giving the fleet a new tool with which to resume their original primary mission - to boldly go where no-one has gone before.

Taken out of active service as part of a "Strategic Reconfiguration" at the end of 2390, the USS Avandar was recommissioned, again under the command of Captain Vetri, in mid 2392. Her mission, once more, to explore...
