History
According to certain records that admittedly are fairly skimpy on details they developed and advanced at a consistent pace. Wars were frequent and for the most part short. So it was for over 3,000 years. Then came the apocalypse, a war so savage and deadly that less than 1 in 50 survived. Most cities and communities were completely destroyed.
Only 20 communities were spared and the people who lived in those cities built massive walls and defenses with plenty of extra space inside the walls to keep everyone out and their citizens safe. As time passed these communities grew, building taller and taller buildings and when needed expanding the walls. They have safe, pollution free power, clean water and all the sophisticated technological devices needed to make their lives simple and easy.
The rest of the population, about 95% live outside these cities. They have no technology that is not powered by wind, water or simple physical strength from both domesticated animals and their own muscles. Any attempt to develop sophisticated technology not powered by any of these three methods is stamped out with deadly force by air ships from one of the walled cities. The same goes for any attempt to develop weapons of any kind.
The city dwellers live in fear that someone will be illogical enough to start another war, one that will destroy them and their world. As a result all of the cities have signed agreements that prevent any of them from actively taking part in any aggressive action against any other walled city.
The rest of the population live in small communities and work long hard hours on farms, growing crops and raising livestock. Opportunities for recreation are few and far between being reserved for harvests, weddings and the frequent sporting matches between villages and the occasional wandering nugger team.
The majority of their population has no written language, yet the select few, about 5% of their population who live in walled cities do. However the rural population do have a fairly complex and accurate mathematical system for calculating odds, performance abilities and a pictograph system by which to organize them. As a result they have records of nugger matches that reach back over 1,000 years to just after the dark times of the collapse that followed the last war.
Government
They have no central government but each of the 20 walled cities does have a city council made up of 5 of its most intelligent citizens. When necessary these councils will work together to create policies or build facilities that are for the benefit of all of them. Examples of this are the defensive satellites, warships and space station in orbit of their planet. After much discussion they agreed that each city would build and launch 20 defensive satellites and construct 1 cruiser to be manned by citizens from the city that built it.
Each and every rural community is totally independent except for the fact that they have been roughly divided into 20 groups. Communities in each group are expected to provide a certain amount of food production to the city that is technically in charge of them. In return that walled city organizes and schedules all of their nugger matches. Keeps track of team and players stats and determines who has earned the right to play in any playoff and trophy matches.
Description
The native Sin'die are typical humanoids with pale white skin and black hair that normally grows in a single strip down the center of their heads from the forehead back to the nape of the neck. They tend to have dark brown or black eyes with a single long black line that goes up and down from the eye onto the forehead and onto the cheek and they come in a variety if sizes and shapes. Their clothes are a mix of manufactured clothes and furs. For the most part they tend to be natural or earth tone colors. Bright colors are reserved for Nugger players.
Physiology
As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.
Psychology
On the whole they are a very calm, relaxed and hardworking people. That is until a nugger game starts. Then they become loud, vocal, violent and prone to numerous abnormal behaviors. These can and often include sudden random acts of violence, over indulgence in alcohol, lewd conduct and promiscuity.
The ruling councils of the 20 walled cities who created nugger claim that it was done as a means of to allow the people to vent their less savory tendencies in a more controlled and less destructive manner than armed conflict.
Religion
They have no formal religion and no documentation survives from before the collapse to indicate that they might once have had one. The only thing that they do have that even comes close to an organized spiritual belief system is their complete and total fixation on the sport of nugger. This sport is an all-consuming passion with the majority of the rural population and even a large number of the city population as well. So much so that the entire population of the planet idolizes star players, for whom fan worship can border on the fanatical.
Mythology
The only myths that they have center around legendary nugger players and as a result it is not unusual for individuals to spend their free time comparing and arguing over the qualities, abilities and stats of these players, even those who have been dead and gone for hundreds of years.
Society
The majority of their planetary population, about 95% is made up of rural farmers in small communities. For the most part they are a quiet people with very little trade or communication between communities. The only exception to this are a very small number of traveling merchants who trade goods made in the walled cities for food and shelter. Crime is minimal; amenities are few except for clean water and adequate sanitation which the walled cities insist on.
The walled cities are different; they have every possible modern convenience, ample non-polluting power sources, sanitation, water, transportation, hospitals, schools, museums, galleries and recreational facilities. They live in the lap of luxury with countless technological devices designed to reduce the amount of physical labour they need to do.
The two only communicate with each other in order for the rural communities to supply food to the walled cities and for the cities to arrange, supervise and schedule the league nugger matches, playoffs and finals.
All large rural communities have a nugger team and usually a number of backup players eager for their chance in the spot light. Even most of the smaller rural community’s usually have a team. There are also traveling nugger teams, sanctioned by the walled cities that travel from place to place who play the game in exchange for food, women and ale.
Culture
They have no form of dance, music or art. What they do have is nugger, a very physical sport that they all love. In many ways it seems to be a hybrid version of Terran soccer, rugby and football.
Nugger
This is both a sport and the all-consuming love and passion of almost every person on the planet. It can be played by both men and women. A team is made up of 13 players of which 1 is the captain, team leader who can play any position.
These 13 players are broken down like this. Only 8 are allowed to be on the field at any time and 3 are protectors, 3 are defenders and 2 are the nuggers. The rest of the team are back up players used to replace any injured or killed during play.
The defenders try and protect a metal stake with a metal hoop at the top set in the ground at their end of the field. They cannot use their hands but do have long wooden poles with a hook on one end and a tough leather pad on the other. They use this staff to strike and stop the nugger. They are not allowed to enter the other teams half of the field.
The protectors also have wooden staff's and are not allowed to use their hands. They can enter the opponents half of the field. All players except the nugger have protective gear. Protectors try and block the other team’s defenders and their protectors in order to give the nugger a chance to slip through and score a point.
The nugger is the only player who may handle the solid wood ball that is called a nugg and it is approximately 8" in diameter. They are also usually the smallest player on the team but this is not mandatory and a few legendary nuggers have been fairly large players. The object of the game is for the nugger to get control of the ball then take it into the opponents half of the field and throw it through the 1 foot round metal hoop that is approximately 5 feet above the ground in order to score a point. The hoop is made out of a 6" thick black metal pipe welded to the top of a 3" metal stake that is driven into the ground. nuggers can throw the ball back and forth between themselves in any form and fashion.
It is not unknown for players to be killed during a game and in very rare cases spectators as well. Injuries are common, some resulting in permanent medical conditions that prevent the individual from ever playing the game again. However most nugger players are treated with great love and affection and they get the best food, ale, medical treatment and just about any man or woman who they want.
Customs
Travelers are always made welcome in rural communities but not in the walled cities. Normally only a citizen of the walled city may enter that city. Other than this many rural communities do have some local custom but they often do not extend to any other community.
Technology
The rural communities are all locked in a pre-industrial level of technology with no form of ballistic weapons and only simple metallic items and tools. The same cannot be said of the walled cities which have numerous advanced technologies, ample non-polluting power generators and highly complex devices. Numerous labour saving devices are available to all citizens and they have ships capable of going into space and docking at their space stations where they build, maintain and repair a small fleet of freighters.
Economy
They are fairly self-sufficient but the cities have developed some long standing trade deals with a few select species and merchants. They import luxury goods, exotic foods, wines, clothe and other unusual items in exchange for their foods, wines and raw resources.
Military
There are absolutely no armed forces of any kind in the rural communities. However all 20 of the walled cities have numerous deadly air ships that they can deploy if needed and there are many defensive satellites in orbit around their world. Added to this is the fact that each city is expected to have built and maintain one space ship capable of military action. All of these warships are named after the city that built them and which provides their crews. These cruisers only have one duty, to patrol and maintain the safety of their system.
Starfleet Intelligence Files
The Tellarites were the first species to encounter them in 2117. It was a peaceful encounter and one that eventually resulted in the establishment of a formal trade deal. However no contact was allowed with the planet’s surface.
In 2186 the USS Stalingrad entered their system on a simple survey mission. They were greeted by all 20 war ships, each named for the city that built it. Eventually they were allowed to conduct their scans and record data about all the planets in the system. However this was only after one representative from each city was allowed to be on board and observe their progress.
Since then only freighters have been allowed into the system and they usually receive an escort from at least 2 of the systems defensive cruisers.
Sources
This is an original species created for Starbase 118 by Cmdr. Tal Tel-ar. It was inspired by my 2nd oldest daughter Cindy who is something of a tomboy and who lights up my life with her energy and spirit.
Also used was the Rutger Hauer 1989 movie called "The Blood of Heroes" for the idea of a sport dominating a societies culture. For some reason Cindy really likes the movie, especially the female lead character.
