History:
Seth was born in East Texas, the son of Anna and James Koan. both of them restaurateurs (as James' parents were before him). Koan's decision to enter Starfleet was largely a byproduct of sheer boredom. While he'd always had an interest in space and the sciences, he saw little opportunity for growth in his relatively small home town.
At 18, Koan applied to and was accepted to Starfleet Academy, initially choosing a specialty in tactical and security, despite his interests in science. After a particularly inspiring instructor politely informed him that his aim was reminiscent of someone suffering from an eye disease that had been cured a century prior, Koan thought of his choice and ultimately turned course for the sciences. On the cusp of his final, full admission into Starfleet, it's a choice he's never regretted.
