Relationships

Alessandro Ferrucci
Roomate on the USS Gorkon

As a junior officer, Lina shares her room with the young Doctor. The chemistry between the two seems to be right, but Lina still has to get to know her roommate better.

Charles Tyber
Former Roommate and friend USS Oumuamua

As junior officers, Lina and Tyber are roommates. Lina is reluctant to call someone a "real" friend, but Tyber is what comes closest to that - or is there even more to their relationship? Since her first encounter with him, she sometimes likes to call him "(Dr) Watson".

Katsim Peri
Former chief and friend USS Oumuamua

Although Peri is her superior as Chief of Science, they are also friends. In fact, Peri is the only person on board the Oumuamua with whom Lina can really talk openly about her feelings. She is the one who came to Lina's mind when she needed someone to talk to about Tyber and the emotional chaos. This is rather strange, but Lina thinks it might have something to do with the fact that Peri and she have a few things in common.

Background

Lina Iniya Dahlquist was born as second child to Frederik and Dayamai Dahlquist in the Swedish city of Goteborg on Earth. This is where she grew up. Unlike her older brother Anders, who was very private and reserved, Lina was a rather outgoing child. As a child she always wanted to be in the center of the attention. Lina herself had never had the closest relationship to her older brother. Her older brother always seemed to be her father’s favourite child, but Anders died due to a tragic accident when he was eighteen years old. This was of course a blow for the whole family.

From one day to the next, the childhood ended for Lina. Because of the loss of his oldest son, his father suffered from depression. Then fourteen-year-old Lina also felt guilty for not having had the best relationship with her older brother. Her deceased brother was put on a pedestal by her father and it seemed that Lina, could never be ‘adequate’ and was not able to do anything correctly in her father’s eyes. Lina was constantly compared to her ‘perfect’ older brother.

Lina at the age of 15 with her friends

This changed her. When she was at home, she often retreated into her room where she read a lot and fled into the world of books. She also started running to clear her mind. Towards her father she played tough and put on a hard shell to protect herself. As a normal teenager she also wanted to spend time with her friends and have fun. She wanted to have a normal life and not grieve all the time. However, her father saw this as a sign that she did not really miss her brother as he did not understand her way of dealing with the loss. This only served to further divide her from her father.

The fact that her father constantly compared her to her “perfect” brother and she could never measure up to him lead to the fact that Lina really started to believe in her inadequacy. She has a lot of self-doubts and has to fight the thought that her father might have been right and she is not good enough at anything. This is the reason why she developed a work ethic that values hard work as she constantly tries to overcome that feeling of being inadequate. She wants to proof it to herself (as well as to her father). She tends to be overcommitting though. Lina is a social person. On the one hand, Lina can be described as a helpful, warm and empathetic person as she knows what it feels like when nobody really cares about you. When she considers someone a real friend, she is a good sport. On the other hand, she has also learnt to play tough and will not let you know easily whether or not you have hurt her feelings. When she is in a bad mood, or feels attacked and provoked, she can become very sarcastic and harsh. She lets others know when she doesn't agree with their decisions or actions.

When it comes to her private life or her family, Lina is very reserved. It is not easy for her to talk to anyone about it. She is also insecure and shy when it comes to closer relationships or deeper feelings. Lina bases her decisions on personal values. In her childhood she escaped into the world of books and read a lot. She dreamed of other worlds and places, which is why she eventually decided to join Starfleet Academy. As soon as she graduated, she left home and her father to join Starfleet. So she went to the Academy in San Francisco. Her father was against it and also made her believe that she would not be good enough for Starfleet. Apart from that, she is quite a spontaneous person and enjoys surprises and new situations, which can sometimes get her into trouble or even dangerous situations. Despite her young appearance and size, she is not to be underestimated as she is very athletic and trained in martial arts. This led to her being transferred to the Gorkon's Sec/Tac department after serving as a science officer on the Oumuamua.

Sheathed Sword 2391
USS Gemini
Traditionally, the Sheathed Sword is given to those who are injured and explore the aftermath of that event. Vanessa Driscoll (now Melik Finley) changed the order a little bit of a different order, but created a narrative that was just as compelling. During out mission, Lt. Driscoll was infected with a pathogen that was, essentially, a death sentence. Over the course of her remaining posts, she explored the implications of facing her own mortality, where the only question was when she would succumb to the effects of the pathogen.

Most of us have a vague idea that our time in this world is limited. But very few of us face such mortality in the same way, with enough time to be aware of it, but with not enough to truly do anything about it. As such, it is my honour to present the Sheathed Sword to Vanessa Driscoll.

Genesis Award 2401
USS Gorkon
We give the Genesis Award to those officers who make a sincere and noticeable effort to improve their simming skills. Mick has definitely done so in the time he’s been with us! He’s sought advice on a variety of topics, taking guidance to heart and always striving to make his sims engaging and his characters interesting. We’re seeing him go from strength to strength, and so we’re delighted to present him with the Genesis Award.
Xalor Clan Xifilis Award 2401
USS Gorkon
Presented by Quinn Reynolds I’m delighted to present this award to Mick, the person behind Lina Dahlquist. He is one of our many writers for whom English is a second language; something many of the Gorkon crew didn’t realise until recently! He doesn’t just use English, but does so in a way which communicates the vibrancy of his character; her hopes, dreams, struggles, and disappointments. It’s a testament to an ongoing dedication to his writing craft, and I’m very proud to recognise his ability to overcome the language barrier to create such engaging sims.
