  • Birthmarks, Scars: The scarred remains of a Klingon symbol are etched into his chest.
  • Carriage: Hurried, sometimes nervous.
  • Taste in Clothing (when off duty): With a mild preference for tri-coloured casual sets, Tildaen generally follows the latest Human male fashion trends - with a tendency towards bright colours..
  • Voice: He stutters, especially in tense situations, and always speaks very rapt.
  • Handedness: Left-handed.

Personality

Given first impressions, Tildaen might come across as quite shy and jittery. He stutters when he is nervous, and he is nervous most of the time when moving outside his usual circle of friends. Owing to his difficult upbringing, he is prone to being quite insecure, focussing his attention on trying to please others. He can also be very controlling, or overly sensitive, imagining bad intentions when there weren't any.

Tildaen can also appear to be a little feminine at first sight, both in appearance and behaviour. Being brought up in a deeply matriarchal Betazoid family has left him deeply conscious of different gender roles. This has made him a little uncomfortable playing the more masculine role that suits Terran society. He has developed a profound personal and academic interest in Klingon culture, which emphasises extremely macho behaviour for men.

Despite his apparent lack of self-confidence, Tildaen Ethelwin is warm and energetic when he interacts with people whom he trusts. He tends to need approval from others to feel good about himself. He is hurt by indifference and doesn't understand unkindness. He can be a very giving person, who gets a lot of his personal satisfaction from the happiness of others. He likes to have a good time with others, in sports or at social occasions. He can be a bit of a romantic, falling in love easily and enjoying the art of flirting. In social relations, he most deeply wants to be appreciated for what he is, though this is an impossible thing for his very traditional family to do.

Tildaen takes his responsibilities as a Starfleet Officer very seriously, and he is generally dependable in carrying out his duties. He deeply believes in the high-held ideals of the Federation. Tildaen at his best can be warm, sympathetic, helpful, cooperative, tactful, down-to-earth, practical, thorough, consistent, organized, enthusiastic, and energetic - if only he manages to overcome his problems.

If unbalanced or intimidated, Tildaen is likely to treat any point of view other than his own with a kind of amused indifference or a tendency to keep those with differing attitudes and opinions at a distance. At its worst, his conflict with the obstinate and unfeeling contingent realities of the world has him retreat to a kind of psychological castle where only those who have the “right” or “nice” approach can enter, and where feelings based on often tortured logic, attitudes and judgements reign supreme and cannot be questioned; a place where: “give and you shall receive” can ironically twist quickly into: “off with his head!”

Hobbies and Pastimes

  • Hobby 1: Tennis - regularly played on the Holodeck.
  • Hobby 2: Going out
  • Hobby 3: Orbital skydiving
  • Hobby 4: Playing 'Go', with Quinn Reynolds

Likes and Dislikes

  • Likes:
    • Confident or slightly arrogant men
    • Flirting with said men. Especially in bars.
    • Klingon language and culture.
    • Group sports and games.
  • Dislikes:
    • Betazoid traditions and culture, especially as practised by his family.
    • His own stuttering.

Ambitions and Goals

Tildaen Ethelwin is eager to prove himself to be a capable Science Officer by overcoming his insecurities and growing as a person. He is eager to please those around him, but also hopes to make the people about the Triumphant think outside the military box. He primarily considers himself a Scientist and an explorer, not a soldier. In his personal life, he hopes to be able to improve the extremely strained relationships with his family whilst pursuing his romantic interests. Sadly, keeping a balance between those two has proven to be almost impossible in the past.

Personal Achievements and Disappointments

Tildaen Ethelwin is proud to have defeated a Klingon thug on his first Away Mission.

Starfleet Academy

Before enrolling into the the Academy, Tildaen spent a year and a half doing a medical internship, using the Interspecies Medical Exchange programme to receive a field post on Mars. His experience helping the family practice, and several elective courses at the StarFleet Academy later on, make him qualified to serve as an assistant medical officer.

In StarFleet Academy, Tildaen was something of a "good time" Cadet. Finally free to do as he wished (to an extent) he took advantage of all the possibilities for entertainment and diversion in San Francisco. As a consequence his performance suffered, and he had to do the first year twice. Throughout the Academy, he suffered from severe confidence issues. He was treated for his stuttering, but frequently rebounds in tense situations.

He did not flunk the Academy on account of a sincere interest in widely different fields of scientific study and (in later years) a dogged determination to catch up. He displayed great loyalty to Federation ideals, which he (privately) considers to be superior to antiquated Betazoid traditions.

Tildaen Ethelwin has received a firm grounding in most of the sciences but his personal interests gravitate towards the Social Sciences. His paper on "The Way of D'era and the Klingon concept of Honour – an ethical approach to interstellar relations" guided his interest to be posted in the sector near Star Base 118. He became involved with a project of Starfleet Science to investigate the disappearance of the U.S.S. Constitution in a temporal anomaly, and was transferred to nearby Starbase DS17 to help with local investigations. His place in the inquiry was terminated with the return of the old starship, which was largely taken over by Temporal Investigations. Ensign Ethelwin was then reassigned a posting as Science Officer on the starship Triumphant, which needed recrewing.
