Background
Tess Evinrude grew up in space. Born to two Starfleet officers, he spent his early childhood on the USS Astraeus, choosing to stay with his mother, Victoria, when his parents separated. When Victoria was reassigned to a starship that lacked support facilities for officers' families, Tess joined his father, Marcus, on Starbase 74. Later, for just two short teenage years, he lived planetside while his father taught at a university in Chicago.
His half-siblings from his father's previous marriage are older, his memories of them more akin to a close aunt and uncle, but they're true family. Everyone supported his decision to attend the Academy, especially his mother, but it was less easy to understand why Tess dropped out after his cadet cruise.
For four years, Tess worked with a group creating interactive holo-entertainment. Some of their work was successful enough to make it to independent holodecks on various stations around the Alpha Quadrant, but just when momentum was building, Tess jumped ship again.
Now 27, writing fictional scenarios on fictional worlds doesn't satisfy. Tess again felt the call of real-world exploration and reapplied for a commission. After a short evaluation period and Cadet training simulation, he's been assigned to the USS Ronin as an Operations Officer.

238109.13: Victoria Evinrude is reassigned; Tess moves to Starbase 74 to live with his father and half-siblings
239209.01: Accepted into Starfleet Academy
239606.01: Graduates the Academy and embarks on cadet cruise
239705.22: Records indicate completion of cadet cruise, but Tess requests to delay entry to further his education. A few months later, he drops out of the Art and Anthropological Studies program to create interactive holo-novels.
240111.01: Requests Starfleet commission consideration. Ordered to undergo evaluation and training assessment.
