“But that inadequacy, or feeling of inadequacy, never really goes away. You just have to trudge ahead in the rain, regardless.”

Lorrie Moore

Sybil is currently serving as a Science officer aboard the USS Ronin.

Appearance, Manner, Personality

  • Species: Human
  • Height: 5'6" (167 cm)
  • Weight: 130 lbs (59 kg)
  • Hair: Her light blonde hair is either loosely tied back. Sometimes, however, it is styled in a tightly woven crown braid across the top of her head. The braid is neat and controlled, with every strand meticulously in place, reflecting her disciplined and orderly nature. This elegant, yet practical style gives her a composed and almost regal appearance, fitting for a Starfleet officer with a commitment to precision and professionalism.
  • Length of Hair: long, but either tied back or styled in a crown braid
  • Eyes: Her eyes are a striking blue, wide and expressive
  • Build: Her build is slim yet athletic, with a graceful posture that hints at someone who is comfortable with both physical training and long hours of scientific work in a lab or stellar cartography.
  • Birthmarks: She has a small, faint birthmark on the back of her neck, just beneath her hairline. It's barely noticeable but something she is vaguely aware of.
  • Taste in Clothing (when off duty): She favors the crisp and functional Starfleet uniform, which allows for ease of movement during duty. Off-duty, her style remains simple but elegant, or relaxed, comfortable outfits suited for her quarters. When attending formal events which do not require uniform, she prefers deep jewel tones like emerald green or navy blue.
  • Voice: Her voice is soft, with a calm and melodic quality.
  • Mannerisms: She often fidgets with small objects, like a stylus or a PADD, especially when she feels nervous or unsure. When she's concentrating, she has a habit of biting her lip or shifting her weight from foot to foot, showing a more anxious side to her otherwise composed demeanor. She also tends to speak very carefully, as if she’s always second-guessing herself, though her tone remains polite and earnest. In group settings, she sometimes hesitates before contributing to discussions, waiting for others to speak first, but once she starts, her words are thoughtful and well-considered.
  • Quarters: Her quarters aboard the starship are a blend of personal and familial significance. Though they maintain Starfleet’s practical and efficient design, there are several sentimental touches that reveal her close connection to her family. A few framed holo-images of her parents and siblings rest on a shelf, reminding her of the high expectations and legacy she carries with her. A small, hand-knit blanket — passed down through her family — lays neatly folded on her bed, offering a sense of comfort and home. Despite the warmth of these familial reminders, there’s an underlying sense of restraint in how she decorates. Her desk is always meticulously organized as if she’s trying to prove herself through her discipline and hard work. Occasionally, she glances at the holo-images, a mixture of pride and self-doubt on her face, wondering if she’ll ever truly live up to her family’s reputation. Her quarters, while cozy and intimate, reflect the tension she feels between being part of a proud family tradition and her own insecurities about not feeling good enough. In the evenings, she sometimes sits in her chair by the window, staring out at the stars. The vastness of space both comforts her and reminds her of the daunting responsibilities she carries as a Starfleet officer and as a member of her distinguished family.

Family

Evelyn Nemes
Mother
  • Occupation: Historian and Cultural Anthropologist
  • Description: Evelyn is a dedicated and passionate historian known for her extensive research on ancient Betazoid cultures. With her expressive dark hair often tied back in a neat bun and warm brown eyes that twinkle with enthusiasm, she possesses a nurturing demeanor that encourages her children to explore their interests. Evelyn is supportive of Sybil’s dreams but can be quite intense when it comes to academic achievements, often unintentionally amplifying Sybil’s insecurities about meeting expectations.

Orin Nemes
Father
  • Occupation: Archaeologist and Starfleet Consultant
  • Description: Orin is a charming and adventurous archaeologist who has travelled to many planets in search of lost civilisations. His lighthearted approach to life and deep love for exploration is infectious, making him a beloved figure in Sybil’s life. He has a tall, sturdy build, a shock of silver hair, and bright green eyes, reflecting the adventurous spirit he hopes to instill in his children. Orin is often the one to reassure Sybil that it’s okay to make mistakes, though he can sometimes be oblivious to her deeper anxieties about failure.

Alaric Nemes
Older brother
  • Occupation: Starfleet Tactical Officer
  • Description: Alaric, Sybil’s older brother, is the family’s overachiever, having quickly ascended the ranks in Starfleet due to his sharp tactical mind and strategic skills. With a tall, imposing stature, dark hair, and piercing blue eyes, he carries an air of confidence that often feels intimidating to Sybil. Unlike the rest of the family, Alaric tends to focus on Sybil’s shortcomings, offering pointed critiques of her mistakes and decisions. His well-meaning but harsh comments leave Sybil feeling discouraged and insecure, causing a rift in their relationship. While he sees potential in her, his constant reminders of her failures create a barrier, making Sybil hesitant to reach out for support.

Mirielle Nemes
Older sister
  • Occupation: Aspiring Starfleet Engineer
  • Description: Mirielle is the family’s creative spirit, pursuing a career in engineering with a focus on designing innovative technology. She has long, curly blonde hair that reflects Sybil’s, and bright green eyes filled with curiosity. Though she shares Sybil’s clumsiness, Mirielle embraces it with humor, often lightening the mood during family gatherings. Her playful nature and ability to laugh at her own mistakes offer Sybil a sense of camaraderie, though she still feels the pressure to keep up with her siblings’ achievements.

Family Dynamics: The Nemes family is deeply bonded by their shared love for exploration and learning, yet they also embody the weight of expectations that often hangs over Sybil. Their home is filled with books, artifacts from various cultures, and memories of adventures, all serving as a reminder of their distinguished legacy. While Evelyn and Orin encourage Sybil to embrace her individuality, they often unknowingly contribute to her feelings of inadequacy. Family gatherings can be a mixture of warmth and tension, with Sybil caught in a whirlwind of love and self-doubt. Alaric’s critical nature looms over her, amplifying her insecurities and making her feel as if she can never measure up. Despite these challenges, the family’s unconditional love shines through, particularly in her relationship with Mirielle, providing Sybil with a safe haven to explore her dreams and navigate her clumsy, endearing journey in Starfleet.

Background

CHILDHOOD / YOUNG AGE

Sybil Nemes was born on the planet Betazed, a world known for its beauty and rich cultural heritage. Growing up in a family of scholars, who lived and worked on Betazed, Sybil was surrounded by the influences of education and exploration from a young age. Her parents, both accomplished historians, often took her on expeditions to historical sites, fostering in her a deep love for knowledge and discovery. Due to this her desire grew to explore the cosmos and understand the diverse cultures and histories of the galaxy. As a child, Sybil showed a unique blend of curiosity and clumsiness. Whether she was tumbling through the garden while chasing after a butterfly or accidentally mixing her paints during art class, she often found herself in chaotic situations that made her stand out among her peers. Despite her frequent mishaps, her infectious enthusiasm and genuine kindness drew others to her, turning her awkwardness into an endearing trait. However, deep down, Sybil struggled with a sense of shyness and hesitation, often second-guessing herself in social situations. The high expectations set by her family loomed over her, creating an underlying fear of failing to live up to their legacy.

THE ACADEMY YEARS

Sybil Nemes at Starfleet Academy 2399

Sybil's journey to Starfleet Academy was a natural progression from her early years. Both because of her curiosity and eagerness and because it was expected of her she followed in the footsteps of her family. Inspired by the heroic tales of Starfleet officers, she applied with determination and hope. Upon her acceptance, she arrived with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, aware of the legacy she was expected to uphold. At the Academy, Sybil quickly gained a reputation for her unique approach to problem-solving. While her practical skills sometimes faltered — resulting in comedic mishaps during training simulations or group projects — her creativity shone through. She often found unconventional solutions that others might overlook, demonstrating an ability to think outside the box that endeared her to her fellow cadets. However, her clumsiness often left her feeling insecure, making her hesitant to speak up in group settings or contribute to discussions. She always felt the pressure to perform well, which sometimes caused her to overthink her contributions, fearing that her mistakes would disappoint her family and friends. Though she was frequently caught in chaotic situations — like accidentally activating the holodeck with an ill-timed command or misplacing her tricorder during an important briefing — Sybil's heart remained in the right place. Her loyalty to her friends was unwavering, and she always sought to help those around her, often going out of her way to assist classmates who struggled. This unwavering support made her a beloved figure at the Academy, despite her occasional clumsiness.

Through her years at Starfleet Academy, Sybil learned the importance of resilience, but her confidence remained a fragile thing. Each setback taught her valuable lessons, yet they often increased her self-doubt, making her question her abilities even more. As she prepared for her graduation, she found herself reflecting on her way with a mixture of pride and apprehension. While her creativity, kindness, and determination had carried her through, the persistent fear of not living up to her family’s legacy loomed large in her mind. Even after graduating, Sybil struggled with her confidence, often feeling like an imposter among her peers. She would glance at her diploma and still wonder if she truly belonged in Starfleet, battling the nagging thought that she might fail at any moment. As she stood on the cusp of her next adventure, ready to embrace the challenges before her, she felt a swirl of excitement and dread. Would her unconventional approach lead to success, or would it be the source of her undoing? In her heart, she hoped to prove herself, yet a part of her remained uncertain if she could rise to the occasion.

Award Name Date/Assignment Citation
Sheathed Sword 2391
USS Gemini
Traditionally, the Sheathed Sword is given to those who are injured and explore the aftermath of that event. Vanessa Driscoll (now Melik Finley) changed the order a little bit of a different order, but created a narrative that was just as compelling. During out mission, Lt. Driscoll was infected with a pathogen that was, essentially, a death sentence. Over the course of her remaining posts, she explored the implications of facing her own mortality, where the only question was when she would succumb to the effects of the pathogen.

Most of us have a vague idea that our time in this world is limited. But very few of us face such mortality in the same way, with enough time to be aware of it, but with not enough to truly do anything about it. As such, it is my honour to present the Sheathed Sword to Vanessa Driscoll.

Genesis Award 2401
USS Gorkon
We give the Genesis Award to those officers who make a sincere and noticeable effort to improve their simming skills. Mick has definitely done so in the time he’s been with us! He’s sought advice on a variety of topics, taking guidance to heart and always striving to make his sims engaging and his characters interesting. We’re seeing him go from strength to strength, and so we’re delighted to present him with the Genesis Award.
Xalor Clan Xifilis Award 2401
USS Gorkon
Presented by Quinn Reynolds I’m delighted to present this award to Mick, the person behind Lina Dahlquist [now Melik Finley]. He is one of our many writers for whom English is a second language; something many of the Gorkon crew didn’t realise until recently! He doesn’t just use English, but does so in a way which communicates the vibrancy of his character; her hopes, dreams, struggles, and disappointments. It’s a testament to an ongoing dedication to his writing craft, and I’m very proud to recognise his ability to overcome the language barrier to create such engaging sims.
