Ashra is the daughter of Strax and Yasli, both esteemed physicians on Denobula. Her father, Strax, specializes in xenobiology, contributing significantly to Denobulan medical research. Her mother, Yasli, is a renowned surgeon known for her expertise in neurosurgery. Growing up, Ashra was surrounded by a large extended family due to the Denobulan custom of plural marital arrangements. This familial structure fostered a deep sense of community and cooperation in Ashra, but she had a particularly close relationship to her only full brother, Irok.
Irok is two years older than Ashra and has always been a guiding figure in her life, providing both inspiration and support. From a young age, Irok displayed a remarkable aptitude for scientific inquiry and problem-solving. Growing up in a household led by two prominent physicians, both he and Ashra were inclined towards the medical field. Their curiosity often led them to assist his parents in their research. After attending the Denobulan Medical Institute, her brother now works as a leading researcher in genetic medicine on Denobula, and for a time Ashra intended to follow him to the Institute, but marriage got in the way.
Like many Denobulans, Ashra was taught to be well-rounded – though she comes from a family of physicians, Denobulan education instills an appreciation for philosophy, religion, and, of course the fine arts. Ashra met her first husband Delix first met at an art exhibition on Denobula. Delix, an accomplished artist, had several pieces on display, and Ashra was immediately drawn to Delix's work. While admiring a particularly striking piece, the two struck up a conversation, and (as Ashra is fond of saying) while many attendees owned new paintings after the event, she came home with a new artist.
It was at her husband’s urging that Ashra was convinced not to follow her brother into the Denobulan Medical Institute, but to follow her curiosity and passion to explore, and apply to Starfleet Medical. Her course of study has been rigorous – arguably more rigorous than her brother’s – but well worth it, as now she stand ready to graduate and take her place among the United Federation of Planets’ tradition of exemplary dedication to the medical sciences.
