« PERSONAL HISTORY »

Tyler Kelly was born to Dana Ann Kelly in 2360 at Antista Medical Center in the Utopia Planitia Colony, Mars. His mother works as a design engineer at a supply plant manufacturing parts for the Federation shipyards located there. Kelly's father (and consequently his precise genetic heritage) are unknown, but he is presumed to be full Terran. Kelly's mother worked hard to support the two, often working long hours and leaving him at home with little supervision when he was not at school. Left to his own devices Kelly spent roughtly equal time studying and causing trouble around the residential sector of the colony. He maintained good grades all through grade school, despite developing something of a reputation for his open disdain for social norms.

After Graduating, and much consideration, he decided to apply to Starfleet Academy. Though many openly doubted that Kelly would be able to successfully conform to such a rigid organization. Having spent his whole life watching the Starfleet ships come and go from the Utopia shipyards with fascination, it seemed like it only made sense for him to try.

Kelly was accepted into Starfleet Academy in the Fall of 2378, despite his numerous disciplinary notations his academic achievements proved sufficient. Kelly adapted quite well to Academy life and managed to avoid major complications. Though some of his professors claim that he sometimes "Purposely tested their limits." Despite this, no one could argue with his academic results, his propensity for calculated risk had become his trademark and he managed to graduate in the upper-percentile of his class with a true double-major in Engineering and Counter-Intelligence in only 5 years.

« PERSONALITY PROFILE »

Tyler Kelly in his quarters on the USS Atlantis

Tyler's personality is considered very divisive by those who know him. Rarely shying away from speaking his mind, he's often the one who isn't afraid to tell people what they may not want to hear. This tends to elicit very binary reactions from those he interacts with; the either appreciate his brevity or think him rude for his lack of sensitivity. As a result of this he often has trouble making friends, while not socially awkward, Kelly does tend prefer solitude over a crowd if he has a choice. Romantically, Tyler has been involved in a few relationships, though because of the strain his career puts on them, they have all eventually fizzled out. As a result he tries to avoid serious relationships and on his previous ships he developed something of a reputation for the traffic his quarters received during late night hours.

Tyler Kelly is fiercely loyal to his friends and crewmates, relentless with his enemies and always seems to come up with a plan when he's backed into a corner.

  • Kelly's Quarters: Spartan and clean, with only a few personal affects. These mostly consist of souvenirs of the places and people he's seen during his career.
  • Habits: Tyler has a tendency to fidget when he's been seated for too long. This usually manifests in him bouncing his knee subtly under the table.
  • Mannerisms: Generally friendly, but when faced with a difficult task, he can get a little too single-minded and forego some common courtesies.
  • Religion/Spiritual Devotion: None. He tries to live by his own moral code, which usually consists of checking his actions against the phrase "Don't be a ****." [Expletive Deleted]
  • Hobbies and Pastimes: Maintaining marksmanship and proficiency with all standard-issue Starfleet weapons systems, Criminal Mystery Holo-simulations, and reading. Tyler earned a black-belt in Vulcan Jiu-Jitsu after becoming interested in hand to hand combat during Starfleet Academy combat training.
  • Likes: Honest people, a good story, bleeding-edge technology, weapons of all types, and women.
  • Dislikes: Superficial and dishonest people, being bogged down by regulations, not getting to finish what he started.
  • Favorite Color: Red and Black, something about the way the colors go together.
  • Favorite Scents: The disrupted atmosphere smell of phaser-fire, real or realistically replicated flame cooked meat, and New Vegas No.5 perfume.
  • Favorite Cuisine: Steaks from the Terran cow or buffalo, flame grilled vegetables and hearty soups.
  • Favorite Alcoholic Drink: Traditionally prepared Hefeweizen beer.
  • Favorite Non-alcoholic Drinks: Sweet tea served with ice in the style of the former Southern United States region.
  • Favorite Caffeinated Beverage: Coffee
  • Favorite Music Genre: Progressive Electronic and Frequency Mod music.
  • Favorite Animal: Sehlat
  • Words/Phrases used Frequently: "You've got it." "Frack." "I'm on it." and "We'll see how it goes."
  • Most Influential Person: James Kirk, for his ability to make difficult calls in times of extreme duress and always find away to come out consistently victorious.
  • Ambitions and Goals: To climb through ranks of Starfleet and eventually command his own ship.
  • Disappointments in Life: His poor performance as First Officer of the Excalibur-A.
  • Greatest Strength: Unrelenting Tenacity.
  • Greatest Weakness: Ignoring the greater scope when focused on a specific problem.

Tyler Kelly at the Tactical Console on the USS Constitution

Starting in 2383 Tyler Kelly served aboard the USS Constitution NCC-9012-B, in the Trinity-Serellian Defense Fleet operating out of Starbase 118. As a part of the TSDF, the Constitution participated in many critical missions along side the Starbase's primary support vessel the USS Victory.

As an Ensign Tactical/Security Officer, Tyler Kelly performed his duties with efficiency and skill and showed considerable initiative. However, he displayed a tendency for making potentially risky decisions in the heat of the moment. Despite this fact, he consistently resolved these situations with a favorable outcome. This, understandably, irked many of his superior officers and likely resulted in his longer than usual time as an Ensign. Eventually his effort and proficiency did merit promotion to Lieutenant Junior Grade.

On 239104.16, Kelly was transferred to the USS Atlantis NCC-74682 and assigned to the position of Security Officer under the Command of Cmdr. Raj Blueheart. He arrived just in time to take part in a diplomatic mission to escort a Grenushi ambassador around the treacherous Jenatris Cloud to Uzoka 4. The situation proved to be even more complex when it was revealed that the "gifts" that the ambassador bore were actually living creatures that seemed to be composed of the very cloud itself. Things came to a head when a militant activist group attacked the Atlantis in order to try and free the captured Jenatris animals. It was discovered that the creatures had an powerful effect on anyone with with any kind of extra sensory perception, causing injury and headaches. During this mission, Tyler worked closely with the science and engineering departments to develop a device that shielded the tele/empathic crew members from the effects of the Jenatris creatures. The device was called the J-SIN (Jenatris Sonic Impulse Neutralizer).

On 239110.14 Tyler Kelly was transferred to the USS Columbia as a Security Officer under the command of Commander Ben Livingston. He quickly found himself thrown headlong into an investigation about the murder of a pair of colonists the Columbia was transporting at the time. Tyler "hit the ground running" so to speak and hadn't even been on the ship for a full 24 hours before he was interviewing his first suspect.

Columbia Mission: Settle For Less

His first mission on the Columbia proved to be a very difficult one. The Columbia was charged with transporting over 100 colonists and their colony pod to the planet of Pernipia Gamma IV but they encountered trouble while en route. After an intensive investigation Kelly charged the prospective leader of the colony, Robert Carson, with the deaths of two colonists who had apparently uncovered his plot to illegally mine a rare mineral from the planet. This was only the start of the trouble, as Carson claimed then claimed he had diplomatic immunity and was later discovered to be an extremely well trained Section 31 operative as well as the brother of a highly placed Admiral. Tyler Kelly and the crew had only begun to address the issue when Carson's aide, Gerard, sabotaged critical systems and broke Carson out of the brig. The pair eventually raided the bridge and took Commander Livingston and the bridge crew hostage. Kelly, with the help of Ensign Heath Story and LtJG Adara Bentley, set up a diversion and raided the bridge. The hostages were freed, but Carson, Gerard and Chief Tactical Officer Vitor Silveira were beamed to a Cargo Hold due to a miscommunication with the Ops department. It was in the Cargo bay where Silveira, Kelly, Carson and Gerard had one last battle. During a heated melee, Silveira was stabbed, Gerard was rendered unconscious and Kelly received a thorough beating from Carson. In the end, Kelly had been nearly strangled to death by Carson when Silveira had summoned the last of his strength to toss him a phaser. Kelly fired the phaser into Carson's chest at point blank range, ending the man's reign of terror and his life.

An image of Kelly taken as evidence during the Internal Affairs investigation of the death of Robert Carson.

With all of the threats resolved, the mission was completed successfully and the crew of the Columbia enjoyed a brief Shore Leave on Pernipia Gamma IV. During an Awards Ceremony, Tyler Kelly was promoted to Lieutenant Commander by Commander Ben Livingston and was given the position of Chief of Security in addition to several awards and commendations for his performance during the mission.

On 239202.16 Tyler Kelly was assigned the USS Excalibur-A as First Officer under Fleet Captain Kalianna Nicholotti. Though his time there would be short, he learned much about the operation of a Starship at the Command Level.

Excalibur Mission: In The Line of Fire
Kelly and the crew of the USS Excalibur-A were dispatched to the Afehirr Sector to deal with a dangerous energy wave on a collision course with the pre-warp planet of Mercadia III. Kelly led an away team on a covert mission to the planets surface in an effort to uncover forces at work that were attracting the energy waves. Upon the completion of the mission, the Excalibur's crew was reassigned.

After the reassignment of the the Excalibur's crew, Tyler Kelly returned to Starbase 118 for Advanced Security Training. On 239208.05, Kelly was once again assigned to the USS Columbia as Chief Security Officer, this time under Commander Brek.

Columbia 2nd Deployment Mission: Force of Nature

Immediately following his arrival on the USS Columbia, the ship was dispatched to the Skalur Expanse to investigate some unprecedented ecological changes on the planet Hemix. In support of Operation Knifepoint, the crew was given a secondary objective: to investigate a rumored Sicarius connection to pirates operating in the area. During the 17 day trip to Hemix, Kelly worked his security forces hard, running several shipwide drills that simulated an attack by a hostile boarding party. While the extra training provided the Columbia's new Chief of Security with a bit of peace of mind, others found the interruptions less pleasant.

Upon arrival at Hemix, two teams were formed to fulfill each of the objectives. A science team to investigate the ecological oddity of the Hemix island led by LtCmdr. Rennyn and a more combat oriented team that was tasked with investigating the pirate threat led by Tyler Kelly. Immediately after beaming down, Kelly's team discovered a strange energy field that seemed to feed off the energy of their communications equipment, cutting off their contact with the Columbia. Proceeding with the mission despite their comm. difficulties, the Intelligence team encountered a swarm of red moths that after being attracted by a phaser blast, enveloped P02 Clay Lewis and killed him by draining all of the molecular energy from his body. As they attempted to escape from the vampiric moths, Kelly's team was surrounded by a vicious gang of pirates led by a Bolian female named Chennel. Meanwhile, Captain Nugra, who had been a part of the Intelligence Team was overcome by the forces of the island and his mind entered and altered state of primal Gorn rage and he dissappeared into the jungle. With an improvised flashbang device made out of a EV Suits power pack, Kelly and the rest of the team managed to evade the pirates and escape the jungle to set up temporary camp in a clearing at the base of the islands central volcano. Unfortunately Nugra, still in his bloodthirsty state, had been hunting them the entire time. Having singled out Kelly as the leader and primary target, he ambushed them, aiming for a killing blow. It was only by the brave and remarkably foolish actions of Ensign Mirra Ezo that he survived, as she put herself in the path of the charging Gorn and took the brunt of his brutal attack. Nugra recovered quickly and resumed his assault on Kelly, leaving him with serious facial lacerations, a broken jaw, concussion and several broken ribs before being put down by a Maximum-power Stun shot from Lt. Theo Whitaker. In the midst of the chaos the pirate's vessel locked on to the commotion and beamed them aboard, once again taking them prisoner.

When Kelly finally woke up, he found himself in the disgusting sickbay of the pirate ship "Lightness of Being" with Mirra Ezo resetting his broken jaw by hand with no anesthetic. Ezo used the meager provisions available to her in the filthy sickbay to stabilize his various injuries, including the expired and contaminated dermal regeneration cream that resulted in their scars being permanent. Unsteady, and only able to communicate with Ezo telepathically, Tyler was forced to kill the guard assigned to them with a archaic rusty old bonesaw when the pirate attempted to harm her.

Eventually Kelly and Ezo were able to reunite with Whittaker and Nugra (Who had broken free from the planet's influence) and storm the bridge together, capturing the "Pirate Queen" Chennel as a team.

Columbia 2nd Deployment Mission: Nightmare

[NOTE: Some of the details pertaining to this mission are classified.]

The Columbia was dispatched the planet Estava in the Kevel System to investigate a mining colony that had gone dark. A matter which was complicated by Imperial and Republic Romulan forces in the area quarreling over whose jurisdiction the issue fell under. Kelly provided security for an investigative party sent by the Columbia to the surface of the planet. Upon arrival they found the Colony empty, but there was evidence of a quick and complete evacuation. After further investigation of an administrative facility, they discovered the Miners had uncovered a previously unknown substance that █████████████████████████████ [REDACTED].

Soon they encountered the horrifying results of exposure to the substance as abhorrent creatures reconstructed from the limbs and bodies of dead Romulan and Reman miners began swarming out of underground tunnels. Running for their lives, as skin to skin contact with the creatures would almost certainly mean infection, the team fought there way out of the Admin building and found the only apparent survivor. He █████████████████ ███████████ ████████████ ████ ████████ ███ ██ █ ███ ████████████████ [REDACTED.]

The team was provided with EV suits for protection from the infection and a Flamethrower unit and proceeded with an operation to retrieve a sample that possibly held a cure to the disease plaguing the planet. Meanwhile, they received a desperate distress call from an as of yet uninfected mine and after commandeering a local transport truck were able to get to the mine and rescue it's inhabitants before the infected could get to them.

Vitor Silveira - Tyler and Vitor became fast friends after the two bonded over a training session on the Holodeck. Tyler sees a lot of himself in Vitor and considers him to be one of the few remaining "War-like old dinosaurs" like him in Starfleet. During the Battle For The Columbia, Tyler was nearly strangled to death by a highly trained enemy combatant but Vitor intervened and not only saved his life but enabled him to defeat the adversary. Tyler believes he will forever be in debt to Vitor for this and considers the man one of his closest friends.

Chythar Skyfire - Tyler and Chythar initially met through a penpal program while he was stationed on the USS Constitution. They became fast virtual friends and regularly exchanged correspondence via subspace mail and traded stories about their latest missions. When Tyler returned to the USS Columbia, he met Chythar in person for the first time. Shortly after, Chythar was transferred to the Gorkon, but he and Tyler still keep in touch.

Mirra Ezo - Mirra Immediately caught Tyler's eye when he returned to the Columbia for the second time, but they didn't actually meet until she was assigned to his away team during the mission "Force of Nature." Tyler was immediately impressed by how well she handled herself on what had turned out to be a very difficult assignment. During the mission, she earned his respect and gratitude by patching up his wounds and resetting his broken jaw so that they could escape from the pirate ship they were being held prisoner on. In the weeks following the events on Hemix the two bonded as they recovered from their traumatic experiences, and it was during this time that Tyler began to realize that he was falling for her. During their shoreleave on Eschevar, Tyler finally worked up enough courage to show her how he felt when he kissed her near the top of the highest mountain on the planet. While the future of what they share is far from certain, Tyler certainly believes it is bright.
