Brief Bio

When Hal was 4 years old, first contact was established with Starfleet. Hal can vaguely remember some of the incidents, including the exodus and kidnapping by the Son’a. The story of Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the Enterprise is what inspired him to leave the technologically inhibited world and journey among the stars.

Because the Ba’Ku decided to remove themselves from advanced technology, Hal’s decision to join Starfleet was not an easy one. It took him a long time to convince his parents to let him go, and he hasn’t communicated with them since. While Hal’s brother was more supportive, even he was somewhat resentful of Hal leaving.

When he first joined Starfleet, Hal was amazed by the ships and considered majoring in Helm and Navigation at the Academy, but ultimately decided on the Counselor track. Five years later he graduated and was assigned to the USS Blackwell immediately before its humanitarian aid assignment to Arndall. Hal was promoted to Lieutenant JG while serving aboard the Blackwell. Then he served for a short time aboard the USS Columbia before being transferred to the USS Eagle where he eventually received promotions to Lieutenant and later Lieutenant Commander. This final promotion included an assignment as Chief Medical Officer. This was short lived. Early in the next mission, Hal sustained considerable injury and became comatose. When he woke up three months later, he had lost a great deal of his physical faculties. He was returned to Ba'ku where the metaphasic radiation of its rings as well as physical therapy and synaptic repair treatments helped him regain control of his body. Physically weakened from months of atrophy, he later traveled to the Par'tha Expanse where he took a position as an occupational therapist aboard the USS Atlantis.

Personality and Mannerisms

Hal has always been fascinated by the stars. When he was a child he would always stay up late and watch the stars, wondering what was up there, what they might look like up close. He relishes challenge but struggles when uncertain. Always in tune with nature, Hal isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. He is a thinker who is greatly concerned with people's motivations. He considers his chosen field of psychology more an art than science and is generally disinterested in science. His understanding of psychology does little to help him with his own insecurities. Hal is highly sympathetic and his approach to counseling is unorthodox as he sometimes allows himself to become emotionally invested in his patients.

Hal is not one for levity in serious situations. His sense of humor is dry and he is not often amused at "sophomoric" pranks and jibes. He does not consciously consider himself to be superior to less serious people but can sometimes come off as sounding if he does. He takes himself very seriously, which causes him to take criticism to heart. Hal is always hard on himself. Anything less than excellence threatens Hal's confidence. Throughout his career he has become more assertive and less patient with those he finds arrogant or uncooperative.

Relationships

Amala Minks
Friend

Hal and Amala met in his second year at the academy, in their shuttlecraft piloting class. After being assigned as partners on a project at the beginning of the semester, they quickly became study partners and friends. Hal harbored secret romantic feelings for Amala, but never acted on them. After the year was over, Amala and Hal lost touch with one another, and Hal felt betrayed, though he recognized that these feelings weren't justified. When Amala was later assigned to the Columbia with Hal, he found himself struggling with old feelings, both romantic and angry. While able to be friendly with her, Hal was relieved by his assignment to the Eagle and therefore separation from Amala and the confusion her presence brought.

Kayla Drex
Friend

Hal met Kayla shortly after transferring to the Eagle and was immediately impressed by her energy and excitement. After a few months of working together, Kayla asked Hal to have a drink with her at a Mexican style Cantina where Kayla taught Hal how to dance. While he had been impressed by her in a professional sense, getting to know Kayla in a nonprofessional setting exposed Hal to feelings of attraction to her as well. Thanks to the tension salsa dancing can create and the ambiguity of her kiss on his cheek, he remains uncertain of how she sees him and is hesitant to address the subject.

Krindo Pandorn
Fellow Officer

While Hal and Krindo aren't close, Hal trusts Krindo implicitly. They have served on three different ships together, with Krindo watching out for Hal on multiple occasions as Hal progressed from a fresh ensign and beyond. When the stress got to Hal on one mission, it was Krindo who chased him down and got Hal to put himself back together. Since then, Hal has held Krindo in high regard as an officer and a person.
