Background
Bas is the oldest of four children born and raised (mostly) on Betazed. His mother is a tenured professor of psychology. His father is a highly skilled psycho-surgeon who has begun dabbling in planetary politics. His family is a vassal member of the Third House based on his father's work in psycho-surgery. Bas has never really seen the need for the House structure, but it makes his father happy, so he smiles and goes along with it. He has three younger siblings, two brothers and a baby sister.
Growing up, Bas often was in conflict with his parents over their expectations for him. His telepathic strength and skills were fairly average, much to his parents' chagrin. They'd hoped and expected he would follow in their footsteps using those abilities for the betterment of society. When they started getting like that, Bas found it increasingly hard every year not to groan and roll his eyes. Luckily, his brother, Esden, was all they'd hoped for in a child. That led to a strained relationship between him and Bas, though. Bas resented the support and praise their parents gave to Esden, but he was also relieved they had somewhere to direct their sometimes overwhelming interests that wasn't him.
As he grew into adulthood, Bas decided that he wanted to attend Starfleet Academy. His parents tried the best they could to discourage him, but he'd made up his mind. As soon as he was legally an adult, he took the entrance exam. His father came around by deciding to use the 'son going off to Starfleet to serve' angle of things in his budding political career. Bas was happy to let him as long as his parents stopped trying to block him from leaving.
The Academy was an eye-opening experience for young Bas. He found that he was drawn to the more physical aspects of Starfleet than the cerebral ones, and ended up double majoring in Security and Tactical. That ate up a lot of his free time, but he still managed to meet and fall in love with a man who was entirely wrong for him. The whole relationship blew up in his face, and Bas struggled to keep on track that semester, but he couldn't bring himself to truly regret it. He did, however, vow to refrain from any more intimate relationships like that again until he'd graduated. It was a vow he struggled with a couple of times, but managed to keep.
