Background
When Arik was young, his father Chamberlain, was a well-known surgeon in the Alpha Quadrant. In the final year of his primary education, Chamberlain asked Arik to follow in his footsteps and attend the College of Medical Sciences at the Tri-Planetary Academy on Aldebaran. Arik applied and was accepted.
At the end of his freshman year, Arik, who was already on academic suspension, was expelled from the school. He had stolen an Argo from the Biology Department and drove it into the fountain in front of the Student Life Center. His roommate testified to the school's Chancellor that Arik had taken a bottle of Romulan Ale from the Applied Pharmaceutics Lab and had been on a three-day bender when the accident happened.
After being expelled, Arik went to live with his uncle Locke (Soto), on Mizar II. Arik spent a year and a half living with his uncle, but while he was there Locke called in a favor, and Arik was accepted to Starfleet Academy.
Before he left for the Academy, Arik and his brother Finn were in an accident which resulted in Finn's death. Arik received help from a psychiatrist and that experience made him want to be a counselor.
At the Academy Arik reconnected with a childhood friend, Brodie Saffles. Brodie's friendship saved Arik from being expelled many times. The day before the final exam, Arik made a promise to Brodie that he would find a way, somehow, to pay him back for all the times he helped him.
