While at Bajor, a report of a derlict ship on a deserted icy planetoid is received. Kodiak, ending leave, proceeds to investigate. Scans of the ship reveal a lifeless Specter class vessel, the USS Umbra. A large away team, beams down only to discover a ship full of corpses covered with a fine dust. Soon the dust is found to be mold spores, and two crew members are infected. The away team returns to the Kodiak which races back to DS9. The spores are telepathic and voracious. It is only when their telepathic connection to their host is interrupted that they die, freeing the affected crewmembers.
