Irina Pavlova

Irina Pavlvoa

Irina was the Armory officer on Grace's most significant assignment; the NX-02 USS Columbia. While Grace and Irina's daughter Katya were in stasis for 219 years, Irina was on the surface of a post-apocalyptic nightmare of a planet.

Katya Pavlova

Katya Pavlvoa

Katya Pavlova was born on April 2, 2170 and went into cryogenic stasis on November 11, 2171. It was Grace as the NX-02 Columbia's chief medical officer who delivered Katya into this world, and Katya's mother, Irina Pavlova, named Grace as the child's godmother.

Early Life

Grace came from a large family, and is the oldest of three brothers and two sisters. She was born and grew up in what she considered paradise on earth, aka Cancun, Mexico. Coming from such a tropical paradise, Grace learned how to swim at about the same time she learned to walk, and remains an avid swimmer and diver to this day.

She wanted to be a doctor from an early age, and attended Harvard University for both her undergraduate pre-med program and medical school.

Starfleet, 22nd Century

Grace joined Starfleet right out of medical school and entered the academy in the year 2160, graduating in 2164. She served on the USS Endeavor NX-05 from 2165 through 2169 and was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the USS Columbia NX-02 as chief medical officer.

USS Columbia was lost, considered destroyed in the year 2171 after a mysterious attack by what were later confirmed to be Romulan birds of prey. Grace (and the rest of Columbia's crew) was promoted posthumously on October 10, 2172.

A Woman Out-of-Time

USS Columbia emerged a battered wreck on the other side of the Aurix wormhole, and while warp drive was undamaged and had enough power for station keeping and maintenance of all 230 crysostasis chambers, the life-support systems were destroyed behind the ability of her crew to repair it. Columbia's Commanding Officer, Commodore Vittorio Moretti, sent all six of his shuttle pods and most of the surviving crew members to the surface of Kjenta II, with orders to return to shuttle down the rest of the crew. As the chief medical officer, Grace was to shuttle down with the last wave as she was busy caring for the many seriously wounded crew members from the battle.

The Columbia's shuttles never returned, and the ship remained in orbit of Kjenta II for the next 219 years. As breathable air ran out, Grace and the 48 other survivors still on Columbia all went into cryogenic stasis, where they remained all of those years.

The away team survivors, essentially immortal while on Kjenta II, included the Columbia's chief science office, the brilliant scientist Dr. Treng, who set them to work on finding a way home. It took almost 120 years, but she finally designed and built an antenna capable of penetrating the ionization layer and sending out a distress signal. The USS Miranda in 2293 responded to that distress signal. For three weeks the Federation ship orbited Kjenta II and through Treng's advanced antenna collaborated with the Columbia survivors to devise an escape strategy. Sadly, nothing they tried could penetrate the atmosphere, and so under orders from Starfleet Intelligence not to leave that monofilament antenna or any evidence of it, USS Miranda fired on the antenna, overloaded its generator (killing six of the Columbia survivors) and left Kjenta.

Another century passed until in 2390 Treng built another antenna, but this time she also built a transporter and converted an old missile into an exit vehicle. Whoever came in response to their distress signal this time would find them prepared, with two escape plans and a very healthy distrust of the Federation. USS Discovery-C, herself badly damaged from the Aurix II wormhole, responded to that distress signal.

During all of this time, the survivors in stasis slept, unaware, and in many cases died as the systems in the stasis pods failed one-by-one. Those pods, designed and rated for a full 30 years, were never intended to last well over two centuries. By the time the USS Discovery-C arrived in the year 2389, only nine of those 49 chambers were still operating within required specification, including those of Graciela Solis and her goddaughter, Katya Pavlova.

Rescue

Following her return to Earth, Grace, along with Irina Pavlova who'd survived the whole time on the surface of Kjenta II, were the only members of Columbia's crew to elect to remain in Starfleet. In Irina's case her training and experience as a marine and armory officer were considered close enough to current standards that she was assigned directly to a starship where she would receive on-the-job retraining. As a medical officer and scientist, however, Grace's knowledge and education were far too dated to be directly assigned. She elected to return to Starfleet Academy and by her own choice, attended the years two through four of the Starfleet Academy curriculum, skipping the first year due to her dated, though advanced education.

Starfleet, 24th Century

Grace graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2393 and spent two years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where she took advanced classes on applied mathematics. Upon graduating with a Ph.D in Applied Mathematics, Grace was assigned as an assistant science officer on the USS Belle. Despite her rank of Lieutenant Commander, Starfleet insisted that she would not be eligible to serve as a department head or any command position until she'd had at least two annual performance evaluations due to her rather unique circumstances.

Present

Grace had only been on board the Belle for a few weeks when the ship was dispatched on a classified mission of which she had very little knowledge. The ship was damaged and while Grace was securing some delicate scientific experiments in progress in a shielded vault, something caused the rest of the ship's crew, and all unshielded organic material, to vanish. She was rescued five-days-later by another USS Columbia.

Abilities and Disabilities

Grace suffers from a few side-effects of her long period of cryogenic stasis. There was some nerve degradation that resulted in occasional and unpredictable muscle spasms and on three occasions she has had fairly violent seizures. While medication has proven successful in keeping the seizures from returning, the unpredictable nature of the muscle spasms convinced Grace that she should no longer work as a medical doctor, or at least not perform surgery.

There was also some damage to her eyes that was mostly repaired, but has left her particularly light-sensitive as her eyes are permanently dilated.

Grace shares both of these conditions with the other 7 adults who were revived from stasis. Katya Pavlova who was put into stasis as a young child has been free of symptoms and side-effects.

Recent Service

Upon her rescue from the USS Belle, Grace was offered and accepted a position as a research scientist on the USS Columbia.

Unusual Possessions

Grace has a few keepsakes from the NX-02, but most dear to her are her old 22nd century uniforms. On most special occasions where dress uniforms are called for she tends to wear her original 22nd century Dress Whites with the NX-02 Columbia emblem. When called for anything she thinks might be dangerous she will tend to wear her 22nd century utility uniform rather than the modern Starfleet uniform, and if carrying a weapon is necessary she still prefers to take the old 22nd century Phase Pistol, of which she has two, both stored in the Belle's, and now the Columbia's arms room.
