The eldest son of a family of typically 'ordinary' Trill, he opted to join Starfleet and see the galaxy rather than accept a position at the Trill Science Ministry. His father is curator at one of the largest museums in Mak'ala City and has an interest in history, while his mother is a nurse. His mother had strong reservations about his Joining, since Maz was the first of the Nevrons to be chosen to be an Initiate. She believes that after the Joining, Maz won't be the same son. The rest of his family were supportive of his Joining. His younger brother Aran is about to graduate high school and has expressed an interest in joining Starfleet.
