Pacifica is the current homeworld of the Selkies and a member of the United Federation of Planets. Mostly covered by water, Pacifican life is mostly aquatic or amphibian, although there are also several small landmasses. The Selkie, also known as Pacificans, are an intelligent species that live the first part of their lives as amphibians before becoming nearly completely aquatic. The planet is an important tourist destination, mostly due to its beaches. Pacifica is located in the Gamma Arbin Sector.[1] On a typical shuttle, the travel time from Pacifica to Cait is about 1 week. Quantum slipstream transports also operate to there.[2] Physical characteristicsPacifica is an ocean world, and is almost entirely covered by oceans. There are also small land areas around the planet. The oceans are characterized as blue, while most beaches are described as white.[3][4] The Pacifican oceans are mostly water, but like most natural bodies of water, they have other substances mixed to them. The Selkies who live out of Pacifica, such as those in Starfleet, are very specific about water quality in terms of oxygenation, nutrient, chemical balance and temperature. If water from Pacifica is not available, they accept water from other sources and replicated water, but the water still requires calibration to fit their specifications.[5] Flora and FaunaMost of the lifeforms found on Pacifica are aquatic or amphibian. Many of the animal species are fish, some of which are used as food. Examples of edible species of fish native to Pacifica include Vellinica fish[6] and a species of shellfish.[7] Various species of sharks and other fish are also native to the planet.[8] There are also colourful coral reefs in the oceans.[4] Different aquatic plants also thrive on the planet. Deep Sea Barin, locally a’rhen’tir or "One with the storm", is an underwater flower with petals similar to algae in a whirlpool like motion.[9] Locationshi'Leyi'ahi'Leyi'a is the capital city of Pacifica. It is located underwater, although it has amenities to host non-aquatic visitors.[10] OthersThanks to its beautiful beaches, Pacifica has thriving tourism industry.[11] In addition to the various resorts on the beaches, such as the on the Black Sands Beach,[2] tourists may choose to stay in underwater hotels instead, where they may see fish and corals. The hotels are protected from predators, although sharks are occasionally let in the area for fish population control.[4] HistoryIt is believed that the Selkies were planted to Pacifica by Orions. Orion slave ships had taken the ancestors of modern day Selkies from their original homeworld to Pacifica. Most common theory states that the slaver ships had crashed there or that the Selkies had escaped slavery, but some Orions believe it was a conscious decision by Orions to liberate the slaves there. Orions call the Selkie shelklee, "the defiant ones". The subject is a matter of taboo among Orions.[1][12] By the early 24rd century, the Selkie had built cities and a civilization underwater. They remained hidden from the Federation, who were considering establishing a colony on the planet. The colonialists made contact with the Selkie by 2310.[12] By 2360s, Pacifica's place in the interstellar community was well established, and the planet hosted interstellar conferences and negotiations.[3] By the late 2390s, the Selkie had expanded to other ocean worlds, such as Deluvia IV.[11] References
