Chief Medical Officer’s Office

About

The chief medical officer was a senior staff-level position, typically held by a lieutenant commander or commander who was a doctor of medicine with surgical skills.

Specific duties

CMOs aboard a starship or starbase were directly in charge of the sickbay or infirmary, commanding medical department personnel and activities. The CMOs' primary duties were the oversight and maintenance of the overall health and physical fitness of crew and passengers. Furthermore as standard medical procedure, the CMO had full medical authority over any patient officially admitted into their care in their facility, including superior officers, until they were formally released from care.

Officers likely to be assigned as the CMO over long-duration missions of exploration had scientific training in disciplines outside of medicine, allowing them to take on major, extended research projects, or to better participate in a wider variety of encounters.

Medical authority

In addition to the normal duties of an officer, Starfleet Order 104 Section C gives CMOs the power to relieve an officer or crewman, including a superior one, of their duties if in the CMO's professional judgment, the officer in question was medically unfit. Typically, the CMO was expected to have the support of a senior command officer or detailed medical documentation to justify this course of action.

The CMO has the authority to order officers to do things that would be beneficent to their health, like sleeping.

Location

The chief medical officer's office was also located in sickbay. As with the captain's ready room, it was an area for the CMO to work in privacy or conduct meetings with patients, staff, and others. Its close location allowed the CMO to be present in sickbay almost immediately. The space could be personalized, and the chief medical officer could use plants or paintings for decoration.

Sickbay

About

Sickbay is the main medical center aboard Federation starships. Sickbay was presided over by the chief medical officer (CMO), a senior staff member. The CMO was supported by various doctors and nurses. The area was also used for certain analyses of new lifeforms a starship might encounter, and for developing treatments for unknown diseases or illnesses. When rendering aid to a stricken planet or spacecraft, the sickbay staff treated and cared for the wounded.

Location

The sickbay is located right next to the main turbolift at the entrance to the medical section.

Medical Laboratories 1-3

About

The Medical section has three small laboratory facilities. The chief medical officer or other associated personnel could monitor experiments or run tests here during their duty shift. The laboratory is equipped with a full bioisolation field.

Location

These three labs are connected to the Main Sickbay and ICU, to allow for quick access.

Intensive care unit

About

Four biobeds line the walls of the Medical Sections intensive care unit, or ICU; these were for patients receiving medical care and were equipped with biofunction monitors. There are also three private rooms that are available for long-term patients.

Counselor Office 1&2

About

A counselor is a position aboard Starfleet vessels and installations, usually held by a senior Starfleet officer with training in psychology.

As with the chief medical officer, the ship's counselor has the power to relieve other officers and crewmembers of duty if he or she feels that their patient is suffering from a condition that may hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively. At the captain's discretion, the ship's counselor may be allowed to wear something other than their normal Starfleet uniform while on duty.

Location

The Counselor Officer's are apart of the medical section on the Avandar.
