Main article: Marines (Duty Post) Starfleet Marines are sworn to uphold the values of Starfleet and the Federation. They are bound by duty to protect and to serve the Federation. Some Marines are part of Starfleet Search and Rescue teams and hold positions in various departments when not involved in a special operation.
A combat pilot is a military aviator trained to engage in ship-to-ship, air-to-air, and often air-to-ground combat while in the cockpit of a small combat craft. Combat pilots undergo specialized training in aerial warfare and dogfighting (close range aerial combat). A combat pilot with at least five ship-to-ship or air-to-air kills becomes known as an ace.
A Weapon Systems Officer ("WSO", pronounced "wizzo") is an flight officer directly involved in all air operations and weapon systems of a military craft, leaving the pilot free for flight operations. Historically, crew duties in military craft are highly-specialized and rigid, because the relevant controls, instruments/displays, and/or weapons are concentrated in front of particular seats, panels or positions. That includes two-seat variants of fighter or attack/strike craft (including types such as the Peregrine Class, SF FA-120 "Falchion", SFMC FA-150 "Maul", SF FS-90L "Longbow", etc). |
