Madison and Gila took most of the same classes at the Academy while taking their Xenobiology Major, but they didn't really start talking until they both entered Starfleet Medical Academy, and were put on the fast track. Since they both were the 'odd ones out' due to taking both 1st and 2nd year classes simultaneously, they started talking, and the two now have a close relationship.
