As Commander Collins and Counselor R'Ariel communed telepathically with Thet, it's hold on the Brothers weakened. In an act of self-sacrifice, partly due to guilt and partly due to the weakened hold of the Iconian, Morgan freed the Brothers from the spell entirely by overloading two phaser rifles and a complement of photon grenades, obliterating himself in the process. The resulting phased energy discharge powered the Gateway, making it possible for Thet to return home to die.
