Liani was born into the upper middle class of Andorian society- her parents worked within the Artisan caste and each had accrued a fair amount of fame in their prospective fields.  At a very early age Liani showed a great aptitude for music, in particular the Andorian flabbjella.  Under her mother Po’s wing she trained and eventually auditioned for acceptance in the Andorian Academy.  Her first attempt was turned away- but on her third try she passed and started her musical training in earnest.  While much of her time was spent at the Academy she was still able to spend occasional time with her parents.  It would be fair to say that Liani in her early years was something of a dreamer- perhaps her grip on reality was not as solid as most other Andorians her age.  It wasn’t until she went to the Sending of her Uncle, a man she had deeply loved and cared about- he had made her laugh, had crafted her first instruments, been a source of levity and great humor.  When she saw his still lying corpse- had seen that there was nothing left of the man she had know- Liani changed.  She continued her pursuit of music at the academy- but in the back of her mind it seemed a pointless, trivial thing.  She hurt herself on occasion- small cuts to watch hot blood freeze on cold ice- like the Andorian witches of old in their prophesying ways.  At seventeen she was taken from the Academy and placed with a group with  three others.  They were nice in their own ways- but how was making children going to help anyone.  She spoke to her parents- she would leave Andor, travel to Earth ,test for entry into Starfleet and make something more of herself than a bit of breeding stock.  Family and clan reacted badly- but thankfully her parents thought more of her than they did the opinions of others.  She was shipped off- at first she thought only to pursue the enlisted mans path- but fortune favored her and she was able to test and enter the new Academy as a proper student.
