A civilian shuttlecraft has been found adrift just outside Romulan space.  StarFleet retrieved the shuttle and has been investigating its contents and the strange condition in which it was abandoned. The shuttle was destroyed by peculiar and unknown means and exhibited a large amount of structural damage both inside and outside the craft. The craft, registered to one Veshtan Lir'Rhal - a Romulan scientist - appears to be connected to the an unknown Romulan male found onboard the USS Excalibur-A during the treatment of the Agurtha plague victims.
While in sickbay, crew members of the Excalibur-A found a concealed data rod in the man's jumpsuit that mentioned a "gateway" on a nearby planet.  The interior of the shuttlecraft also bore the word 'gateway' scratched into the screens and bulkheads.
Mineral analysis place the man on the uninhabited planet Avronis V in the recent past.  Avronis V is uninhabited, largely unexplored, and has a history as a waste dump for antimatter prior to the Hobus explosion. Officially, all dumping has ceased. However, the planet remains saturated with theta radiation, presenting a difficulty for exploration both from orbit and on the surface.
StarFleet Command, concerned by the unusual destruction of the craft and the threat it may pose to the Federation, has ordered USS Excalibur-A to investigate. Excalibur will travel to the nearby planet of Avronis V in search of any clues that may shed light on the situation, including anything related to the "gateway" mentioned on the data rod, the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the shuttle, and the reason a scientist might have been on Avronis V at all.

[[Excalibur Things We May Find|Things We May Find Full Report]]<br>
News begins to filter in about another bout of plague in the Lambda Hydrae sector. At the same time, the Excalibur crew is given word of a small fleet of Romulan vessels causing trouble for federation traffic near the neutral zone. Research turns up the name 'Ralaaram Ocala', which, it can be determined, is the name of a type of Romulan light cruiser. The mystery of why a bandit fleet would name themselves after a type of ship is solved when it is learned that the term translates to 'sky fire'.

As it turns out, the much-lauded '[[Skyfire Cure]]' was used widely on Agurtha and Lambda Hydrae. Soon after the cure became widespread on the latter, a new and unusually virulent strain appeared, resistant to the cure. People began dying; this time, even hybrids were not spared. A group of Romulan physicians has come up with a treatment that seems to be efficacious, and by now the disease is close to being under control. However, the death of a large chunk of the population has been linked to Starfleet, and to the name Skyfire. Rumours that the Skyfire plague is in truth a genetically engineered weapon released onto unsuspecting Romulan civilians are running rampant.

---
The tension is quickly heightened, as the Ralaaram Ocala are spotted heading rapidly for the Onias sector. Research reveals their motive - the presence of a mineralogist named Skyfire...
