==History== | |||
In order to conceal the Paxans' existence from intruders, they terraformed their adoptive world, a protoplanet in a pocket in the Ngame Nebula. If an intruder were to come within their territory, they would be confronted with an apparent wormhole, in actual fact, an energy field, which would stun the ship's crew and place them in a state of biochemical stasis. The ship would then be transported out of their space. The intruder would then regain consciousness, assume the wormhole was responsible for their altered position, and depart.
Ironically, the unusual nature of the planet prompted the USS Enterprise-D to investigate it in 2367. This resulted in two encounters with the Paxans. On the first occasion, the Paxans' normal attempts to escape detection failed, as Lieutenant Commander Data - an android - was immune to the energy field and was thus able to fend off the Paxan takeover.
To escape destruction, Captain Jean-Luc Picard convinced the Paxans to erase the crew's memories of the incident, and ordered Data to never reveal the existence of the Paxans. However, clues left behind by the crew led them to return to the Paxan system, and once again into conflict with the species. Picard was able to convince the Paxans to give them a second chance, this time taking care to erase the clues that had stopped the deception working the first time around.
Just over 3 years later in 2370 the USS Titanic had a run in with the Paxians as well. However in this case there were 23 Vulcans serving on the ship, including the commanding officer. As a result they eventually figured out that something had happened. They considered going back and checking it out but since they could not find any concrete proof they deduced that whatever had caused the incident had some form of technology that was in some way either superior to their own or radically different. They did launch a couple deep space probes and then positioned relay satellites in their wake as they left the area. As a result they got a brief glimmer of the presence of a planet where there should not have been one. Then the probes were destroyed.
When they reported this to Starfleet, Lt. Cmdr. Data was forced to come forward and explain about his encounter with the Paxians. As a result the Federation has declared the area off limits and has set up a wide circle of warning beacons that notify all passing vessels that this area is quarantined by Federation Directive # 724-8943682.

Their "wormhole" stun-trap keeps away most visitors or robs their memory of the Paxans, but Lieutenant Commander Data's positronic brain is unknown to them and they threaten destruction of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D twice -- until Captain Picard convinces them that their memories can be erased and Data agrees to share the event with no one
