Zoyara was raised, along with her four older brothers, within Starfleet starbases and ships. Her father, General Vailani Tovan, left the Bajoran militia during the Dominion war, and joined Starfleet so that he can aid in the war effort as a security officer and eventually landing within the Starfleet Marine Corps, and rising through the ranks fast. He instilled in all of his children a strong desire to succeed and achieve the best that they can. Placing immense pressure on all of them.
Her mother, Vailani Pol Chella, was also in the Bajoran militia, having been a resistance fighter during the occupation of Bajor by Cardassia. She left service once she began to have children, preferring to focus on her duties as a mother and attempting to live a more spiritual life on Bajor. When Tovan joined Starfleet and the Dominion war ended, Chella joined Tovan with the children to live within starbases and starships for years. Eventually this would lead to her unhappiness, and she would return to Bajor when Zoyara was a young teenager leaving her children to complete their education within Starfleet.
This had a lasting impact on Zoyara who has seldomly spoken to her mother since, and has only visited Bajor a handful of times. The rift deepened when Chella could not support her youngest child's decision to join Starfleet along with her older brothers.
Zoyara has always been influenced by the Bajoran beliefs, something that she retained from her mother as her father showed no reverance to the Prophets at all.

As a young girl Zoyara idolised her father which meant she wanted to emulate him. This lead to her adopting perfectionist traits and over the years becoming overly judgemental and harsh on her peers. She can be abrasive, pushy and extremely headstrong, even to this day.
SHe has very few friends and the ones that she does have she tends to frustrate with her nitpicking ways.
That being said, Zoyara has an incredibly loyal personality and when you are her friend she will do anything to protect you - sometimes without thinking. She also has a strong pull towards those on the outside, as often, she finds herself on the outside of social groups.

=== Starfleet Academy ===
Zoyara was an exceptional student at the Academy, most of her professors admired her dedication to her studies and she rarely got below an A on any of her assignments. Much of this was due to her father's overzealous monitoring of her progress. The subjects she scored lower on were the assigments she was forced to work in teams alongside others. Due to her abrasive nature she tended to isolate herself and rarely made friends.
Although she excelled academically, she struggled socially. She spent a lot of time on her own, and in between semesters she'd return to her father's station on Starbase One, in which he'd have a regular training routine set up.
=== USS Artemis-A ===
Zoyara's first commission was the {{USS|Artemis-A}}. She struggled to adapt to a new routine in which she had to work alongside others. In her first few months on the ship she had 3 different room mates until she was assigned quarters with [[Luxa Lorana]]. Whilst on the Artemis she began a tentative and tumultuous friendship with Luxa.
She was a competent officer but her attitude let her down and she was often overlooked due to this. One signifant event had a major impact on Zoyara, when she was almost killed when a booby trap exploded after the Artemis had been boarded by Suliban terrorists. <ref>[https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/x1LSJvi5SOE/m/Eltd3l1XAwAJ Not Like This] 240006.28 Ensign Vailani, USS Artemis-A</ref>
Shortly after this incident she was transferred to the {{USS|Ronin}} for her relaunch.

General Vailani has been the most signficant influence in Zoy's life. He was a demanding father, always striving for his children to be the best. Zoy seeks his approval more than anything.

Zoy was raised, along with her five brothers and sisters, within Starfleet starbases and ships. Her father, General Vailani Tovan, left the Bajoran militia during the Dominion war, and joined Starfleet so that he can aid in the war effort as a security officer and eventually landing within the Starfleet Marine Corps, and rising through the ranks fast.
Her mother, Vailani Pol Chael, was also in the Bajoran militia, having been a resistance fighter during the occupation of Bajor by Cardassia. She left service once she began to have children, preferring to focus on her duties as a mother and attempting to live a more spiritual life on Bajor. When Tovan joined Starfleet and the Dominion war ended, Chael joined Tovan with the children to live within starbases and starships for years. Eventually this would lead to her unhappiness, and she would return to Bajor when Zoy was a young teenager leaving Zoy and her siblings to complete their education within Starfleet.
Zoy has a lasting resentment to her mother, but embraces her spirituality as a way of connecting with her as well. It is clear to anyone that Zoy is the apply of her father's eye and she idolises him and his achievements.
