| Born in the aftermath of the Dominion War, Lima Ironhorse was born to two Starfleet veterans who grew up together but only got together at the wars' conclusion. Their brief courtship resulted in Dakotas' pregnancy, and Limas' subsequent birth. While both parents were discharged from Starfleet, they both went to work for Yoyodyne repairing and building starships. Lima grew up fast and strong, and competed in track and field throughout his high school years, and also became quite good at the newly rediscovered sport of baseball, excelling at second base.

| Growing up, Lima had heard his father talking about serving on board the USS Charleston during the war. His mother served on board the USS Callahan , the ship being badly damaged at the First Battle of Chin'toka, the ship being patched back together and spent the rest of the war along with several other Starfleet vessels defending Andor. His mother did not speak as freely about the war, and when she did, Lima could tell the memories she had were most uncomfortable and unpleasant.

| His parents didn't flinch in their support when Lima stated his desire to join Starfleet. They never were ones to dissuade their children from following their dreams and ambitions, but they did not spare telling Lima not only about the beauty of watching a nebula, but also the dangers inherent of being in space. Nothing could stop him from getting to space, and he made it a point to come home for the annual ritual buffalo hunt, riding his horse Coco for the event.
