The Rangers emphasise planetary survival skills and the ability to work alone for long periods of time to explore, patrol, and protect the borders of Federation space. They work closely with other organisations such as [[Federation Security]] and the [[Colonial Coalition Marshals Service]] as consultants, usually in regions Starfleet would not normally send a crewed vessel. Some remain with the Rangers for many years, even devoting their entire career, while others serve only a single tour of duty before accepting a new assignment elsewhere.
