==Early Life==
Born at the end of the Cardassian Occupation, Zal was raised in Jalanda City in the Hedrikspool Province on Bajor. His mother was a member of the Ih'valla D'jarra and came from a long line of painters, sculptors, and musicians. Zal's matriarchal family lineage had been well documented back to the 8th century. He has a Bajoran Earring created by a distant relative from the 8th or 9th century that has been passed down as a family heirloom for generations. His mother was an incredibly devout follower of the Prophets. It was her greatest wish for Zal to become a Vedek and follow the Prophets.

Zal's father was a member of Ke'lora D'jarra who was raised off-world on the Bajoran colony of Free Haven. He was a mysterious figure and was loosely involved in Zal's life growing up. He was a member of the Bajoran Resistance. His father hid his affiliation with the resistance in an effort to protect Zal's family from the Cardassians. A few months before the official end of the Cardassian Occupation, Zal's father disappeared. It was assumed that he was captured and killed by Cardassians, but it turns out he left Bajor to help support the Free Haven colony.

The difference in castes between Zal's mother and father was a cause of great friction among Zal's extended family. As a consequence, Zal didn't know much of his aunts, uncles, or cousins although Zal was close with his maternal grandfather.  Zal has a younger brother who does not remember much of the Occupation. Growing up during the Bajoran Reconstruction was tough for Zal and his brother. Without Zal's father being present, he was left to be reared in the strict Bajoran faith of his mother. Under the Third Bajoran Republic, Zal's family received a general stipend for living and was rationed food. His mother, who did not inherit the artistic skills of her family, struggled to make ends meet. As a result, Zal grew up impoverished and without a ton of prospects off-world.

Zalbac studied Communications and Operations and minored in computer science. He had applied to the Academy primarily to get off of Bajor as he did not see many opportunities for him under the Third Republic of Bajor during the reconstruction. He was not the most studious of students and often relied on the sympathy from his professors about his Bajoran ancestry to get through some classes. He excelled at his engineering courses and enjoyed building things with his hands. Zal also enjoyed his computer science and programming courses. At one point, he had considered joining the Daystrom Institute and building a career in studying synthetic life. He did not enjoy his diplomacy classes. He was once set up with a Cardassian cadet to simulate how to find common ground, instead, the encounter ended up in a brawl. This nearly ended Zal's tenure at the Academy.
