Background

Mek'Tul is the youngest son of Kortok and is a member of House Tenalor. While Tenalor is not one of the great Houses, there is much honor within the House and respect from outsiders.

At a young age Mek'Tul showed promise in the ways of the warrior and entered the Klingon training academy on Ogat at the age of ten in preparation for his age of accession, which happened at thirteen. At the age of eighteen, Mek'Tul's father informed him that he would be married to the daughter of an ally House for the purpose of creating greater bonds and perhaps uniting the Houses. While reluctant, Mek'Tul agreed believing it to be his duty. Unfortunately, the marriage was called off when Mek'Tul's bride-to-be felt her honor had been slighted. It emerged that Mek'Tul was continuing a secret relationship with another warrior from a rival House while still courting his bride-to-be. While conflict between the Houses was averted, their long standing relationship was damaged and Mek'Tul fell out of favor with his father.

While his older brother became an officer in the KDF, Mek'Tul was instructed by his father to learn the ways of the healers. Despite being upset at the instruction Mek'Tul followed the orders and studied for three years at the Antaak Institute, part of the Klingon Medical Authority, on Ganalda IV. While at the Institute Mek'Tul was instructed by not only by Klingon healers but professionals from the Federation who were there as part of an exchange program. Mek'Tul exited the Institute with the equivalent of a nursing degree. Soon after completing his studies, Mek'Tul requested his fathers support in joining the KDF. This request was refused as his father had heard of Mek'Tul's continued casual relationships. This along with his continued reluctance to marry for alliance caused his father to privately question his Honor.

Furious with his father, a dual was only averted due to the words of his Mother who suggested that MeK'Tul would find honor within the Klingon Empire's close ally, the Federation. While originally strongly opposed to the idea, his father eventually agreed to the request after conferring with other leading figures in House Tenalor. Within weeks Mek'Tul had applied for enlistment into Starfleet.

There is some whispered speculation within House Tenalor that Kortok was pleased to have his disappointment of a son far from him. However, the one warrior who drunkenly voiced this idea was disemboweled by Kortok.
