Lorian, to put it simply, is not your average Vulcan. While he does have the classic Vulcan intuition and work ethic, he takes his time to enjoy himself. His work is his passion, his plants are more to him than mere lifeforms, they are his life's work, and he treats them as such. This passion, due to him not following the teachings of Surak, has manifested into more of an obsession due to his emotions being more extreme than most other humanoids. His sense of humor is also allowed to thrive due to his lifestyle, making the Vulcan, at least of the surface, seem jovial and upbeat at most times. In the face of reality, however, his hardships, losses, and history of running away has driven him to persistent alcohol usage as a coping mechanism. Like his passion turning to obsession, his enjoyment has turned to addiction, for the alternative is a deep sadness that he fears has turned into something worse.

Soon after joining Starfleet, he realized he could finally use his humor without being shunned. This realization changed Lorian’s life. He began to lax his emotional control, he became more human-like mentally. He didn’t fit in with the Vulcan cliques at the academy, instead he mostly had human friends. He also took various cooking classes, attempting to master the culinary arts. On stardate 239209.26, he was walking past a dorm room when suddenly it's door opened. A human male was walking out with a small kitten. He promptly told him how his cat had a litter by accident and he was giving away kittens and was wondering if Lorian wanted one. He happily accepted and Captain Patches entered his life. After majoring in science, specializing in botany and xenobiology, as well as minoring in command, specializing in diplomacy with hostile species, he graduated Starfleet with the flying colors expected of a Vulcan.
