During his time at Starfleet Academy, Carter has come to recognize a few people he considers friends and mentors. In different ways, they have left an impact on him.

Carter grew up in San Jose, California. He felt strongly and passionately about Starfleet since he began reading about the exploits of the various captains. With that in mind, he cast a gaze towards tactical and decided to enter the academy on his 18th birthday. 4 years later, he's a tactical officer with a major in Tactical and minors in Helm/Comm/Ops.

After nearly facing death due to a faulty console, he thought about making a career change to engineering. He was encouraged by the captain and chief engineer to discuss this over with someone first. After a session with Counselor {{n|Raissa|Moonsong}}, she helped him realize that his place was in the engine room and he had no business being behind a tactical console unless he was repairing it.
