En route to their first mission within the Borderlands, the USS Resolution discovers a derelict ship adrift not far from the Klingon neutral zone border. The ship is identified as the USS Unity, a Constitution-refit class (one of the last) that had gone missing and presumed destroyed over 50 years ago. Commander MacKenzie led an away team over to the ship to make an attempt to figure out what happened and to try to restore power so that she could be taken back to Starbase 118 to be decommissioned properly.

The Resolution was dispatched to the Da’al homeworld after Starfleet received a request for assistance from the government’s military advisor, Zeneth, who cited a potential Klingon invasion. The Da’al, a non-violent warp-capable species, had previously refused to establish formal relations with either the Federation or the Klingon Empire, citing their desire to remain independent.

Commander MacKenzie led an away team to the surface to investigate the motives behind the Klingon occupational force. The away team learned that the Da’al and the Klingons share a common ancestry, and the Klingon force was sent to welcome the Da’al into the Empire. The military advisor attempted to advocate for the continued separation of their peoples and asked for the Federation’s intercession, but when Starfleet tried to mediate the dispute, the prime minister moved to assume total control of the government. After MacKenzie questioned the prime minister, which was accidentally widely broadcast throughout the Da’al home world and its outlying colonies, the prime minister’s true intentions were revealed and he was faced with immediate protests by the citizens under his jurisdiction. He was immediately placed under arrest and is awaiting trial.

Before Starfleet departed, the advisor responded favorably to the idea of establishing peaceful relations with the Federation in due time. The Klingons left the system without incident.
